11/12/1992 NO4 - Campaign - Replacement of Cruise Control Linkage Rod The following 4 recalls apply to nearly all model 964's from 1989-1992: Campaign Number: 96V147000 Date: 1996-Aug-08 Component: Steering: Wheel And Handle Bar Defect Summary: A PART OF THE STEERING COLUMN UPPER UNIVERSAL JOINT CRACKED DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. Consequence Summary: THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN NOISE AND FREE PLAY IN THE STEERING SYSTEM AND IF LEFT UNCORRECTED, WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE UNIVERSAL JOINT FOR CRACKS AND WILL REPLACE CRACKED JOINTS WITH NEW PARTS. Campaign Number: 93V204000 Date: 1993-Dec-07 Component: Electrical System: Fuses And Circuit Breakers Defect Summary: AFTER THE ENGINE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF, THE REAR HEATER WILL AUTOMATICALLY OPERATE IN ORDER TO DISSIPATE HEAT IN THE ENGINE HEATING SYSTEM. DURING THIS OPERATION, THE RESISTOR FOR THE REAR HEATER BLOWER CAN BECOME OVERLOADED DUE TO A BINDING OR SEIZED REAR HEATER BLOWER. Consequence Summary: THE OVERLOADED RESISTOR CAN CREATE HEAT SUFFICIENT TOIGNITE THE PLASTIC AIR PIPE TO WHICH IT IS CONNECTED, RESULTING IN AN ENGINECOMPARTMENT FIRE. Corrective Summary: PORSCHE DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW RESISTOR CONTAINING A CIRCUIT BREAKER. Campaign Number: 93V205000 Date: 1993-Dec-07 Component: Service Brakes, Hydraulic: Power Assist: Vacuum: Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings Defect Summary: THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE PRESSURE REDUCTION VALVE CAUSES THE RATE OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE REDUCTION TO SLOW DOWN, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE REAR WHEELS LOCKING-UP EVEN WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM IN OPERATION. Consequence Summary: REAR WHEEL LOCK-UP MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLECONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT. Corrective Summary: PORSCHE DEALERS WILL INSTALL A MODIFIED HYDRAULIC BRAKE PRESSURE REDUCTION VALVE. Campaign Number: 92V142000 Date: 1992-Oct-05 Component: Vehicle Speed Control Defect Summary: THE BALL SOCKETS ON THE CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE CAN BREAK, ALLOWING THE CRUISE CONTROL LINKAGE TO BECOME DETACHED ON ONE END AND JAM ON NEARBY COMPONENTS, WHICH COULD IMPAIR THROTTLE PLATE OPERATION. Consequence Summary: IMPAIRED THROTTLE PLATE OPERATION COULD PREVENT THEENGINE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE, RESULTING IN UNWANTED ENGINE SPEED AND POSSIBLEVEHICLE ACCIDENT. Corrective Summary: REPLACE THE CURRENT PLASTIC BALL SOCKETS WITH A NEW LINKAGE USING STEEL BALL SOCKETS, AND LUBRICATE THE CRUISE CONTROL RELAY LEVER. OWNERS ARE ADVISED NOT TO USE THE CRUISE CONTROL UNTIL THE MODIFICATION IS INSTALLED. |

I have a noise in my steering when turning the wheel at very low speeds (e.g. parking). There is a loud click. Much like that made when the blinker catch engages, but I don't believe it's that because it happens at random positions of lock on the wheel. Thanks, Dave |
What is the life of a recall? If you take a 15 year old car in, will they do the recall work for free? Or is there a time limit on them?

No time limits on NHTSA issued recalls. Those are safety issues and they have no expiration date.

Just curious. There is a limitation based on the age of the vehicle. In order to be eligible for a free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on the date the defect or noncompliance is determined. Under the law, the age of the vehicle is calculated from the date of sale to the first purchaser. For example, if a defect is found in 2003 and a recall ordered, manufacturers are required to make the correction available at no charge only for vehicles purchased new in 1994 through 2003. However, consumers should realize that even though manufacturers are not obligated to remedy safety defects in older cars, a safety problem might still exist. If you receive notification of a defect on a vehicle older than 10 years, take the responsibility to have your car repaired at your own expense – and eliminate unnecessary safety risks. |
