Default New battery - UK

OK, my battery (OE Porsche...original?) has flattened again yesterday - no apparent reason, except that I started it about half a dozen times yesterday because it kept stalling on startup.

Looks like the battery is not holding its charge like it used to, and as I need to be able to trust the car 100%, a new battery is needed.

The guys in the US swear by the Optima batteries, but what about UK - can we get Optima here? Do they have the same power (ie 360A)?

What has everyone else done when changing the battery?

I went for a Bosch Silver as they got the thumbs up from a lot of Porsche owners. It's a type 096 battery (that's the UK generic code) and rated at 75 Ah. The Bosch code is 7HN. It's zero maintenance and has an indicator window to tell you the state of charge. It cost me £75 from an automotive counter (CES Ltd).

75 Ah is more than powerful enough for any 964.

I also went with the Bosch Silver 75. It also comes with a 3 year warranty; for what it is worth?!?

I get all my batteries from Lucas Service (LSUK), always good and suprisingly cheap. Not had to get one for the 964 yet though - touch wood!

OPC Price for a Porsche battery is £134.36 inc VAT.

My friendly parts guy at Sutton Coldfield OPC will do it for £85.

Bosch or Porsche? I'm sure the Bosch one is the better battery, but the Porsche one just gives the right message!

Rob,

Get to Costco! Even if you have to join at £25 it'll still be cheaper than the OPC.

Got the batteries for both the turbo (a spare) and the M5 from Costco and have had no problem. Love their three year guarantee but went in for a battery and came out with four cases of wine and a 32" LCD TV.........

Early days I had two new Bosch batteries fail with a bad cell within 6 months ,

all in the UK !!

I moved to a 75A Varta that has run for the last 9 years . I have a permanent charger on that battery and its great .

I would hesitate to put a factory or Bosch battery in a torch !!!

Update:

Well, the best laid plans...

I charged my existing battery on Wednesday and reinstalled it on Weds evening, ready for my 6.30am start to Castle Combe for a trackday.

6.30am...car barely started, battery obviously not held charge well overnight.

By the time I got to Castle Combe (90 miles ish) the car would not re-start. Had to go to Halfords and buy a new battery.

1. I canlt believe that my battery went from 'OK' to 'dead' in the space of a day.

2. I can't believe that I now have a Halfords battery!

Anyway, it seems fine, has a 4 year warranty so I'm not worried!

I have a Bosch in mine that I bought 6 years ago, just after buying the car.

I think it needs replacing now though - when I've taken the car out, the indicator is never "green" - although it does reach green when it's trickle charged overnight. The other possibility is that the battery is fine and my alternator is knackered I suppose, but I hope not!
