Post OBD1 Scantool Interface Group Buy (fully assembled)

I am happy to report that I have completed my 964/993 scantool hardware interface prototype and it works on my 964. (bad news: I have trouble codes!)

I started this project because I needed to get a PCB of RayCM's schematic so I could read the trouble codes on my car. Then I found out other people wanted bare PCBs as well after buying Mojorizing's beautiful 19 pin plug. Then I found out most people just wanted to buy the hardware fully assembled (a turnkey solution).

I have tried to make nice little package I wouldn't be ashamed of sharing with others and tried to make it super manufacturing friendly to get the assembly costs and time low. Making 20 of these is not exactly "mass production" so all the little bits get pricey.

The group buy price is (group buy closed) plus shipping to your destination as long as I can get at least 20 people interested. Hopefully with the combination of 964 and 1995 993 owners I can hit that number.

Here is the "turnkey" solution you get:

1)Scantool Interface Module (proven RayCM schematic design built and used by several 993 and 964 owners already)
- 964 owners have the 3 position switch DELETED
- 993 owners get a single 3 position switch for the various modules
2)6ft Serial Cable if you want RS232 connection
3)USB-to-RS232 converter cable based on FTDI chip so it works (to future proof the device even if you don't need it now)
4)Required software on a CD-ROM: DougBs Scantool freeware for 964 or 993, FTDI USB drivers
5)The required cabling with connector for your car, either a 19pin 964 pinout, a 993 19pin cable, or a 993 OBDII cable.

(if you already have Mojorizing's 19 pin cable, send it to me and I will deduct $25)

If you are interested in one of these units please email me: RXD964 at GMAIL dot COM with the following:

Name:
Address:
Email:
964 or 993?:
If a 993 owner what is your connector, 19 pin or OBDII? (see last photo below):

I will be collecting names for the next couple of weeks and then place the order for units. Figure around Sept 1st for initial deliveries. Boards take time, assembly house takes time, etc.

Currently I only have 7 of Mojorizing's custom made 19pin plugs for the 964 model only. I am currently developing my own 19pin plug solution for the 964 and the 993 as the pinouts are different. Probably won't be as nice as Mojorizing's connector but it will fit properly, use 2.5mm pins, and most importantly be keyed so that it is impossible to put it in the wrong way. Hopefully that will be ready in time.

If you are a newbie and wondering what this is all about, I will explain. This software/hardware device allows you to read the troublecodes of the various modules on your car. In particular to quote DougB, the author of the software:

The software can:

• Read/Clear fault codes for the Motronic ECU, air bag, climate control and PDAS.
• Run actuator tests for Motronic. This is a test that cycles the different actuators such as the resonance flap and fuel injectors. During the test you’re expected to listen for the actuators clicking on and off.
• Display values from the Motronic’s analog inputs such as the voltage from the air flow meter and temp sensors.
• Display the state of the Motronic’s idle and wide open throttle switches.
• Display Motronic’s actual operating parameters such as rpm and load. Practically all of the operating parameters are available but I believe the version of the software that’s currently out there has a limited list of parameters.
• Display Motrinic’s high/low range AFR trim values along with a live O2 sensor signal.
• Display the state of the PDAS traction control switch.

What it can not do:
• Bleed the PDAS system.
• Operate the transverse and longitudinal locks.
• Display ‘knock counts.’ This isn’t really a diagnostics feature. It’s implemented separately with a +12 volt pulse signal."
Yes, I wish I could figure out how to get PDAS bleeding to work but I am not a software or electrical engineer! I am lowly mechanical engineer.

Top view of interface module with cover off.

The connectors / cable are on one side of the module (mojorizing's 964 19pin shown):

And the switches and LEDs are on the other side of the module. This makes it easy to have the module face you to monitor the LEDs and switch position while the cable goes out the back.
(993 interface with 3 position switch shown, 964 deletes this switch)

Same shot as above but with status LEDs glowing and frosted labeling applied so you know how to set the switch and what each LED means.

993 owners need to tell me if they have a 19pin Connector as shown on the left, or the OBDII Connector, as shown on the right

Ricardo- I've got most of the parts, just not most of the knowledge. Looks like I should go to school for engineering! Good luck with the interfaces. I'm not in right now, but that could change.

Anyone with a C4? What do you do about bleeding the brakes without the actual hammer?

A Bosch hammer is only required when you want to bleed the traction control interlocks. This system is basically separate from the brakes so bleeding with a hammer is only required when you accidentally drain the system, replace the booster circuit or crack a open line from the pump assembly onward.

I'm traveling and don't have my book with me, but I thought Adrian's book suggested that one should have the hammer in order to bleed brakes.
