Colin,
Today I took delivery of my new boat ! Cummins diesel so it just works .
I dont give a damm what mapping it has, cam spec etc etc !

For someones interest, I did use , just like the factory , 993 NA DMEs to map a few 993 RSR replicas , complete with 6 RSR throttles, RSR cams and all the bits.

With it all worked out they idled a bit rough , barked on power and all the usual stuff.Whether anyone would want to drive one every day is highly debateable !

I would get a Rotrex S/C or a Turbo on my 964 if I wanted really big bhp but
where I live, 110kms is the big limit so why bother !!Maybe I am getting old
or tired !

All the best

Geoff

Bosch has some new (relatively) el'cheapo cylinder head pressure sensors that GM are going to be using next model year. AFAIK they don't require any water cooling like the expensive lab grade sensors so they might be a better option than what you are looking at if they can be used with motec?

Interesting - I've had 964s for years now, and been on Rennlist for years too, and I don't think I've heard of anyone trying this...

The loom issue sounds like the tricky bit...is it the entore loom or just the ECU wiring?

What would be the expected cost and gains?

Any other side effects, positive and negative?

I've never really considered more power in my 964, but I wonder if this approach gives a good bang/buck ratio?

Rob,
A few years ago I replaced my 964 motor with a 1997 993 . That included a 993 Motronic loom + DME. With a sensible bit of planning the swap took a weekend.I then completetly understood the DME wiring hook up .
Not much more than a list of 964-993 !

There is no reason why you cannot simply convert a 964 to 993 MAF system simply by swapping the DME , loom , throttle, MAF. Indeed , quite recently , a guy on this forum has done this work.
This happened as a result , after some long conversations we had , that this represents a very good way to have the most up to date MAF system .

Maybe he will join in .

Maybe the fact that it has been done will encourage ?

Rob,
As Geoff says, fitting a 993 ecu and loom is fine if you are doing the job yourself with used components but this is not an option for anyone to do on a commercial basis. Speaking with my business hat on, I simply could not afford to take the risk of selling unknown used components, especially a wiring loom, given the possibility of getting one of the recalled 993 looms that could catch fire. As an exercise i will price up the new parts required from Porsche and post them later in the day, it should be interesting to compare it with our Motec conversion!

Colin,

I am now getting prepared for a deep shock !!! Knowing how Porsche charge
anything is possible .
I have a GMC truck and bits are so low cost I have a deep culture shock everytime I get something. I have a set of 4 Genuine Bilstein heavy duty dampers coming in for it . Cost ---$250 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colin; yes, I completely understand that it's not a viable commercial exercise and can see why Motec is your preferred choice.

In fairness, Motec would be my first consideration if I was after more power, especially as it can continue to be used with further modifications and upgrades - makes the most sense as the first step.

It'll be interesting to see the prices for the 993 parts from Porsche though.

I should add of course that the easiest way to get more power as far as I'm concerned is to simply change cars...

Here we go:

993 non varioram ecu £1121.43
993 DME harness £817.65
993 engine bay harness (includes injector wiring) £475.77
993tt fuel injector £132.51 each = £795.06
993 MAF meter £373.13
Typical live remap £500
Labour to fit above (8 hours?) £500
Total price (excluding airbox, idle control valve, air intake pipe, air filter) = £4583.04+VAT

In comparison:
Motec M48 ecu £1169.00
9m M48 to 964 adapter loom £325
9m injectors £648
MAP. TPS, AT sensors & brackets, 9m air intake and filter £495
installation labour £500
Live dyno mapping and road fine tuning £500
total installed and mapped price = £3500+VAT (fixed price deal)

Looks like a no-brainer to me......

Except that in 99% of cases this method adds so much weight that the nett performance gain is nil.

Looks like a visit to a Porsche autojumble could save some money to make things a bit more viable ! + those are the disgusting UK prices !

Live this side of the Atlantic and you soon discover why guys over here do things !!

Thanks for the prices Colin. With that situation I see where you are coming from.I surrender !!

All the best

Tell you what Rob, why not make this a feature article? Get John to buy all the bits, then bring the car to us. first we'll fit Motec and power test the result then return the car to stock. You can then go and get all the bits fitted, have the ecu remapped and bring it back to us for a dyno comparison and all could be revealed in the next issue of Total 911.

Oh sorry, I forgot. You need someone to do the 993 ecu conversion and map it properly first, don't you? I know a man that could help....
