Default Is 400m (1/4 mile) commute bad for my car?

My office is only about 400m (1/4 mile) from home, and I walk to work.

We recently had a baby (boy), 4 weeks old, and I now frequently drop in to the house during the day, help my wife, see the kids etc. Because we are so busy at work, I often don't have the time for the leisurely walk, so have jumped in the 964 for the 400m sprint, there and back!

Is this bad for my car? I never go past 2500rpm, as car is still stone cold by the time I arrive! I have sometimes done the trip 2-3 times in one day.

I know, I am just lazy, but it's also an excuse to drive my car, which I love

PS. I used to also use my Vespa scooter, but currently it's off road, hads developed a petrol leak!

PPS. before any wise-guys suggest it, no, I have not used the opportunity to practice my 0-400m times, and get them below 5.5 sec. There is 1 round-about and 1 traffic light in between, spoils my times!!!

Two words for you: oil sludge.

Vapor turns to water, water mixes with oil, creating sludge. Sludge causes engine to cease, you're looking at an expensive engine replacement. Even if you do change your oil very frequently to avoid sludge you're wearing out the internals, since the most wear and tear on the engine is done when the oil is cold and doesn't lubricate all the internals properly.

Just walk the 400 meters. That's what, 5 city blocks?

As long as you drive it until it gets good and hot atleast once a week to boil off possible water why not. Cars are driven like that all the time and these should be no different. I really wonder how many of these have needed a rebuild because of this. You bought the car to drive so drive it

skateboard?

segway?

bicycle?

or your vespa... #1 bet.

from what i've read and learned it's definitely not a good thing to [repeatedly/routinely] start a car cold, then shut it down before it reaches operating temp.

just my two cents.

Bicyle, now there's an idea! I have one of those, I will dust down and put some air in the tyres... sometimes the most obvious solution is staring me in the face!!!

Even worse that your trip for me are the times when we need to juggle the position of the cars on the drive if me or the Mrs needs to make an early start next day. The idea of starting the 964 up for less than a minute makes my cringe. So I find that the juggling turns into a 20 mile drive

In addition to above mentioned issues, I previously had a commute of ~2 miles (~5 min) and that slowly killed my battery for it did not have enough time to replenish the drain from starting the car and running the AC at full blast during the summer.

Although the car I used was not a 964, the effects should be the same.

Not sure if you would have the time, but you could just keep driving until it is warmed up.
It is kind of like when I take mine to the grocery store, which is only about 2 miles away. I take it out and stretch its legs, then get the groceries, then head home.
(My wife gets pi**ed when I go for bread and milk in the Porsche. It takes me an hour. )

When I bought my 90 C2 three years ago, the original owner drove it daily to work about 2miles each way and had a total engine rebuild at 88,000 miles . I don't know if that was the reason messing up the engine by short driving . I got the got at 108,000 as second owner and it's driving perfect .

Not that it makes sense now since I changed my avatar again, but...

Unfortunately, that was the last of those ladder accessories during a weekend sale at Lowe's, so I had to pick one up. Something about promoting extreme customer satisfaction...

Take it easy!!
