Default Help! Beloved 964 in flood

Our 93 964 C2 Cab spent the weekend in 3 feet of water - as did many other East Coast cars. The electrics are gone.

It was insured for $40k. We might be able to get most of that and the car...

The engine is strong and just had a 60k service. New master cylinders and calipers x4, new fron rotors and pads...., major tuneup, all new belts and hoses....New Koni's, new tires,

The insuranc company will pay to tear down the motor before they say uncle. Does it make sense to put a custom interior into it, bump the motor up to 3.8 and redo the electrics or should we take the cash and look for another car?

It seems a shame to see it sold for scrap....

take the cash. It will never be worth much no matter what you do to it in repairs.

I think if you do a search here there was someone else that posted something very similar about a year ago. (I want to say it was Bangkokian, a member here.) There were some helpful suggestions. However... If you can get 40k for it... IMO... Take the money and run.

I was flooded a bit over 3 years ago, and the stuff that is in the flood water isn't pretty. Highly corrosive, so you just don't know where the fun will end down the track as far as faults popping up.
Take the money.

My 928 was flooded in Katrina. I took the cash and got a beautiful 964. So take the cash you will not regret it.

Ditto. Take the cash. Buy the car for salvage if it can be had cheap. Otherwise, say goodbye to it. No matter what you do to the car after this point, it has a flood history which means no one in their right mind will touch except perhaps as a tub to build a track car on...

edit: Scratch the track car statement. I just noticed in your original post that its a cab.

Take the cash.

On a separate topic, how did you get your car insured for $40k?

My 1990 C2 Cab is only insured for $25k. I wouldn't expect a $15k differential in replacement cost.

Make sure the insurance company pays to tear into the bottom end and not just the top. If any water made its way into the crankcase your oil pump (I think its magnesium?) is toast. I've seen photos from several flooded 964s and in every case the oil pump looked like it had (literally) dissolved in the water. I think in a few cases it wasn't immediately obvious until months later when they took the engine apart because of oil pressure problems and found holes in the pump case.

Take the cash....then buy it back as salvage to part it out or use it as a donor car for your next one!

Not sure where he lives. I got a buy out of $46k on mine a year ago. But that is CDN$$$

Anything in amazing condition with low low Km is close to $40k and above here.

Ps. I have not got my 91 cab appraised yet, but I am assuming $40k plus for mine. It is in better shape than my last marginally and lower km.
