Default alternator question???

had a warning light for charging system(battery light on clock), and tested voltage at battery. it seemed that the alternator was working somewhat--- got a reading of around 13volts when revved the engine--but according to adrians book, this indicates a failing alternator or voltage regulator. decided to pull the alternator. when removing the three leads, i noticed that the blue lead (small lead next to the large red lead), was corroded and actually the wire broke, and a three inch length came off in my hand. although this may be the cause of all my problems, i am going to go ahead and put in a rebuilt bosch alternator while i have it apart---just to be sure. i went back to where the wire in question was sound, and spliced in a good section of wire with a new connector, and shrinkwrapped and taped everything in. my question is this--- what is the function of this blue lead??? could this have been the cause of my low voltage issues????? thanks-----------tom
