Disconnect the negative battery cable from both the battery and the attachment point to the car's body. Take a wire brush and thoroughly clean both ends of the cable (inside and out) and the negative post on the battery itself. Also wire brush the connection point on the car's body. Then reinstall the cable. This will cure a number of potential problems and should be part of the routine maintenance on these cars.

i have run into this problem --probably four of five times in the last couple of years. replaced the dme relay--not the problem for me. i have seen mention of this symptom in a lot of older threads (searchower loss downhill). noone that i have seen has found the problem for this enigmatic occurrence. this happens so seldom for me that it will be almost impossible to sort out. anyway--- will be watching this thread for any possible fixes. good luck.

Might be your battery or alternator. I had similar symptoms; it turned out to be the DME not getting constant voltage. Apparently, it has little tolerance for voltage dips. My alternator was putting out less than the optimum voltage. Replacing it fixed the problem temporarily, but it reoccurred a few weeks later. Turned out to be the battery going bad. Took a long time to figure this out the first time. Replaced the battery and it's been good ever since.

I've also had this happen after a downhill or coasting down on the freeway, engine is still running but when I go to add power again the accelerator pedal seems dead. When I pump the accelerator it comes back.
I've wondered if it is caused by a sticking or intermittent throttle/idle switch (engine thinks the throttle is still closed for idle and therefore does not increase fuel flow through the injectors).
