Default Space saver tyre... in or out?

Bleed the brakes at lunchtime, had to haul all he crap out of the boot area. i was curious, how many of you run daily without the space saver spare? I remember reading that it provided some structural protection with a head on, true or not?

I have never had to use it and I have a can of tyre weld anyway.

Cheers

I always carry the spare with me for two reasons:

1) The Fix-A-Flat doesn't work that well. It's particularly bad to use with low profile tires, because they are more prone to sidewall damage. Picture a nice 2" gash on the side of your tire. No spray can will fix that. You'll need to call a flat bed truck. True, I've never had to use my spare tire either, but the odds are against me, so why risk it

2) The spare adds weight to the front end which is always a good thing for our cars.

I can also see how the spare could provide structural support

My 2¢.

For crash safety alone, keep it in. You are worth the extra weight.

Also helps keep the battery wedged in place if your battery retaining tab is all rusted.

I agree.

I spoke with the owner of DC automotive and he says the spare tire does a great job of keeping deflecting the damage around the gas tank.

From looking over his salvage yard you could tell which cars had a spare and which ones didn't by the severity of damage.

In the car, inside the bag provided by Porsche for that exact reason.

There should be a large plastic bag folded up in your toolkit. The factory provided it for just this situation where you need to put a large, dirty wheel/tire into the back seat of the car. If you don't have one, I'm sure a large garbage bag would suffice.

I had to use it myself once about 10 years ago. My car interior smelled like "stinky tire" for several weeks afterwards.
