One thing I've always wondered about Boxsters is...can you really work on them in your own garage?
The 964 appealed to me the most out of all post-1990 Porsches as I feel like I can do almost anything to it in my garage, without a lot of expensive tools, or a lift.

It depends. Brakes & suspension stuff, just like any other Porsche. Motor or trans? Everything else is from underneath, but it's almost the same with a 996/997.

Boxsters are nice cars, but not as hardcore as 911's, even less so than older 911's.
Most Boxster owners i know are moving up to 911's or wish they were! Or they're hairdressers, or girls!!

Hey Gang:
I Friend of Mine has a boxster and does all of his own repairs, It is easier in many ways to work on and is very quick around the track. It lacks the low end torque but is a really well balanced car.
His has 145,000 on it and it runs great .
I would own one if I had the room in the garage but would not replace my 964 as it is just a fantastic , hardcore, fun, thrilling , exciting and eye catching car.

I test drove a regular Boxter (forgot what year but probably pretty early) before I got my 964. My impression was that it handled great but it lacked power. I never got around to the Boxter S though which I hear is a lot better.
The 964 suited me also because it had back seats. I took my 18 month old son (at the time) for rides in it and he loved it. He will be 2 soon and I can't wait to get the car back on the road so we can share some father and son P-car moments.

I bought a '98 Boxster when I sold my '84 911, and then bought my '91 911 a year later when I sold the Boxster. Now, the newer base Boxsters are much improved, and the "S" models even more so. However, the Boxster is not a 911--it doesn't look like a 911; it doesn't sound like a 911; and, most importantly, it doesn't handle like a 911. It is a different car, not an improved version an existing car. Same manufacturer; different car. If you find the 911 driving experience intoxicating, you will miss your 911 if you go to a Boxster. I did. If not, you may find in the Boxster the intoxication you did not experience in the 911. And if you don't find it in the Boxster, there are BMWs, Jaguars, etc. to sample. I hope you do find a car that gives you that driving experience, because for enthusiasts (and I presume those who spend time on this board are enthusiasts), that is what it is all about. Good luck.
