low speed chattering noise from front of C4? what could it be???
when taking off from a stop light or driving the car in low rpm under load i can hear a rattling/chattering noise that dissipates around 2500 and goes away completely.. I have no idea what the noise is but its definitely coming from the front of the car.. I do have a light flywheel and race clutch but not sure if that has anything to do with it??? Thanks for all the help with my questions being a 964 newbie

I have what think is a similar noise. Can get it to happen in all gears, seems to be more prevelent/louder under load while at lower rpms. Goes away after 2500. Have tried with diff locks locked and unlocked, no difference. How can I check the cv joints? Check for play, pull and dissasemble? Any help would be appreciated.

I had one, and know that chatter. This one almost sounds like a low chatter/moaning. Of course the only way to replicate the noise is on the road. Cant happen on a lift, that would be much to simple. Trying to borrow a set of chassis ears to see if I can pinpoint.

I have a 1989 C4. Previous owner replaced original clutch with a new one. I have a standard single mass clutch, with the springs, not the rubber center.
My car has this chatter noise at low RPM especially if lugging the engine. My 1989 Carrera 3.2 did the same thing. The noise sounds like it is in the front, but I suspect it is / was the clutch or the tranny.
I also had a 1992 C2 that I wrecked, and it did not have the noise, and it had a lot of miles on it and was not in nearly as good a shape as the other 2 cars. That car had the Dual Mass flywheel, and I suspect that was the reason why it was so silent. The clutch takeup was a lot smoother on the C2.

Sounds like the normal front end transmission rattle with that set up ! You could spend a lot of time looking for that , never to find a cure !!

I wish I could say it is, but there is a twin to my car local that I have driven. Same roads, same load, no noise. If it is a normal noise I have no problem in leaving it alone, but just concerned that it could be something more serious.
