Thumbs up Did this just yesterday...

I tried the LED-lightbulb replacement shown in: p-car-dot-com --> diy --> key .
Had it done in about 1/2 hour. (A bent paperclip was my tight quarters 'surgical' tool.)
Follow the polarity instructions in the orange box at the bottom of the page and you'll see the light...

You might be better off buying a replacement key head off fleabay for about 20 quid.

I did exactly that, bought a replacement key head from e-bay which was very easy to fit. My dash board has thanked me as it doesn't get stabbed any more.

This is definitely the way to go. I tracked down several fresh batteries for my key fob. (These things can be hard to find!) I took mine apart and cleaned all the contacts. Even that was not good enough to keep the bulb from dimming periodically. I think the LED is the way to go... Gives better light too... Depending on the LED you buy.

Thankyou guys for the info, i think i may buy the LED sounds more reliable, i have a small torch on the key aswell but trying to hold that and put the key in the ignition is timely and difficult in pitch darkness and like someone mentioned you feel a bit of an idiot stabbing the dashboard.

I just did the LED swap and... WOW... What a difference! I have a bunch of LEDs in my shop so I decided to go ahead and try this out. I used a 30,000mcd white LED. (Make sure you use a super bright LED!) I also used different batteries. Instead of the 1.5V Silver-Oxide 389 type I used two 3V Lithium CR1025. The LED puts out almost twice the brightness with the double voltage. I can actually used it as a flashlight! If you are sick of the low powered, non working light in your Fob, you can do this swap in about 5 minutes.

I bought the LEDs from ebay for some other projects. (Under cabinet lighting) I have them in all sizes and colors and from 10mm all the way to the micro sized. The Lithium batteries can be found at Radio Shack for around $5 each. (You can get them on ebay for MUCH less!) The write-up is over at P-car but here is my version...

First just dump all the contents out on a table. Keep the spring and the copper contact plate on the bottom. Save the rest of the contents to put your key back the way it was when the LED burns out in 100,000 hours. Put the copper plate and the spring in the key. Push in the 5mm LED (slips right in!) in place of the crappy bulb that was in there. Twist the positive lead of the LED around the tab on the copper plate and bend the other so it goes over the negative side of the stacked batteries. (Make sure you seperate the leads so they don't touch!) You can use #389 1.5 volt batts or the CR1025 3V lithium. I like more power! (Insert Gorilla grunt here) Make sure that the positve side of the battery faces down. After stacking the batteries correctly, just place the little round plastic on top of the batteries and then the rest of the surrounding cover over that and press them back together. Then marvel over your much, much brighter light!

Here's a pic of how bright it is... It really doesn't do it justice though... You really can use it as a small flashlight.

Have fun!

By the way... You don't need to push hard like you used to using the original bulb. As soon as it makes contact it's 100% on and bright!

James -- (I'd long forgotten this post. Mine's still firing bright over a year later.)
