Default Suspension Geometry Setup

I've had my 964 for a few months now and I'm getting round to those little jobs that I want to do, like replace the radio (going badly). Now on my previous car I had the geometry done periodically as I found it made a huge difference to the handling and feel of the car. It would cost about £130 for a full laser alignment taking about and hour and a half. Now I got a quote today for the job from a Porsche specialist and the quote was over £400 (plus extra for unseen problems) and the car was needed for 2 days. It the Porsche generally difficult to set up or is this price unusual?

The alignment on a 964 is not difficult. It is a 1-3 hour job depending on skill and how much adjustment is required.

Who was the specialist ?
Sometimes seized bits can add dramaticly to the process , especially if alignment hasnt been done for a long time.
Front end is straightfoward, rear is an itteritive process to get toe and camber in spec.
Because of the wide track + short wheelbase , alignment is very important on all 911s !

Rather not name the specialist yet, in case the price is just daft and it turns into a 'name and shame'. But I can say they are very well know in the SE England and in porsche motorsport circles, so I would say they are top end of the market. But the basic price and time needed seems so high, especially as given the age of the car there could be problems that push up the price. Just wanted some point of comparison, I mean at this cost is is halfway to a full suspension change.

That sounds like Parr. Very, very good company. If I am right, be careful when doing price comparisons .
There is an element of you get what you pay for !

Good luck

I have just been quoted £280 (inc. VAT) by OPC Swindon for a full four wheel alignment on my 993. I think the 993 is a bit more complicated to set-up than a 964, and so the £400+ you were quoted seems high.

Try your local OPC.

Update.

I just tried OPC Reading (I live in Reading, but work in Swindon). For a full 4 wheel geometry reset, they quoted £375. I told them that I had received a lower quote from OPC Swindon (Swindon had offered a 12% discount due to the age of my car). OPC Reading then also offered a discount bringing the cost down to £277.59 (inc. VAT).

I've booked it into OPC Reading!

OPC Colchester, £175 incl, and they allow me to wander around, generally ask inane question to the guy setting up the car, and ask if I'm happy when they are doing the work, I could recommend this as a service. ( the price can be higher if they don't know you or non PCGB)

I know JZ Machtech usually quote something around the £220 + VAT mark. As has been said already, if any of the bolts are seized it just makes the job that much more difficult and time consuming.

Thanks for all the posts - very helpful as a comparison. Anyone know what equipment that use at the OPCs and where the extra money is likely to be spent at the specialist I have a quote from?
