Default Advise on lowwering & 17" wheels

New member looking for some advise on lowering my Targa and will be putting 17" ers on her next spring.
I want to use the Targa for weekend fun and light DE; if light can be used when it comes to DE. I think the lowered look will be much better
I have picked up a set of wheels which I will have refinished this winter:
993 362 124 00 7JX17 55 Front
993 362 128 00 9JX17 55 back

Now I what to lower the Targa. What is the best value? Just lower. Or a full kit such as the ones from Bilstein>

Any suggestions on a suspension upgrade:
I have started to read some about Bilstein products:
BTS – BILSTEIN TUNED SUSPENSION
PSS - PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEM,
PSS9 – PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEM
They are described as full blown suspension upgrades.
Is they a basic lowering kit that could be considered?

On my 1990 C4 I use : Bilstein HD's, H&R Green Lowering springs, and cup 1 (7x and 9x 17") wheels. I set my front and rear camber to the negative max and use 235F and 275R...no fender roll necessary. Also, adding steering stops (1cm to the front) avoid fender liner rub. These mods are inexpensive by comparison to other combinations, perform well on the track, and set the ride height to a bit lower that ROW with a tad bit of rake. You can go as extreme as you wish, but the dollars add up quickly.

You could take it in steps as I plan to do. I have the Eibach lowering springs and, while many here have gone with the Bilsteins, I may try the Koni sport adjustables. From there, adjustable spring perches, and beyond - maybe the JIC's. More money for all the changes, but better understanding for the funds spent.

Here is mine that I *just* finished working on. This is with the HD's and the 965 (red) springs.

I raised it 15mm and had it aligned on Saturday. So far, I'M LOVING IT! I was afraid it would ruin the street manors (I drive this one 150 miles a day to/from work). Not only did it not harm it, the improvement, added control is wonderful.

Those wheels are 17's. Running a 225 on the front and a 255 on the rear. Plenty of room for more tire. NO rubs, not bumps, no weirdness. Can't wait to lower the 993, but I think it will get the PSS9's

I'd save and do it all at once with parts that are designed to play well with each other. Althought it's not tough to do the suspension swap.. it's not something I'd want to do very often! Plus you have to get it re-aligned and that's $$$ too.

Don't forget that the HD's are preload/ride height adjustable over a pretty decent range. Oh.. yeah.. duh.. here is a picture of the front end parts. I have pics of the shocks before I put them in too.... but not anywhere online.

I plan on lowering mine this winter as well. I have the same Cup 1s as you have and that alone was an improvement, I am looking forward to the Bilstien/H&R setup. Where is the best place to get for a 90 Targa?

FotoVeloce, we can't see the pics!

For light DE, the H&R/Bilstien setup is great, especially for the $$. If you start to really track it a lot, you will want an upgrade... I went to Cross (wow, really wow). I also have the 17" Cup II's. They are cheap, light and fit just fine. I had to run spacers F & R in order to avoid rubbing issues with the H&R/Bilstien setup because it has more travel than the Cross setup, with Cross I have had no rubbing, it's just too stiff.

Here is mine with HD's and Eibach set pretty low along with 17" wheels. Amasingly does not rub around town much either, I guess because of the short overhangs front and rear.

Looking good Steven.
Foto-I can't see your pictures either.
Where are people buying the Bilsteins and H&Rs and do you specify Bilstein for Boge struts? Do all 964s have Boge struts?
Also, does anyone run the red 964 Turbo springs? Do they lower the car the same amount as the green ones? I thought they may not since they're stiffer and the Turbo weighs more.
kgorman-do you prefer the Cross because they're adjustable or because the ride is different?

Steven C:
What brand of wheels do you have. The only ones I have seen like that are "RH" wheels and they are only available in 18".

92C2Targa,
I would check the ET of those 993 wheels to be sure they will fit a 964 !

All the best

I would try to test different dampers (on others cars) in real life so they are to your liking first. On the other hand H&R make nice lowering springs for factory dampers.

This car is approx 2,5 inch ground clearance and I have no problems with 17" wheels nor does it hit the ground on regular roads.

But then again the dampers /springs are very stiff.

Regards,

Daniel Saxlid

RATS! I'll try to post them on a server other than my blog or maybe just add to a post... :/

I took a couple of more of the car last night with the final ride height. I need to change my office hours, going to work when dark and coming home when dark is real drag when you want to photograph something like a car..
