Default Alternator replacement = $650?

Just got a quote from the mechanic. $650 to replace the alternator with a rebuilt, core exchange. Seeing how a rebuilt is only $280, does it take 3+ hours to replace the alternator?
The mechanic is a new guy. Robert at Dutch Treat.

Don't know about the labor but I picked up a Bosch reman. unit for about $152 from egermanparts.com That price was after exchange... and it was remanufactured by Bosch.
I just checked and it looks like the current price is $165.

Shops will always charge at least 25% additional on parts.

Eggplant, I recently got a quote to replace my alternator for $700. I thought it was too expensive, so I went online and bought a re-built Bosch unit for around $200 and spent 3 hours replacing the unit myself.

I thought it was going to be difficult, but having read a number of posts here about replacing the alternator, I jumped into it and came out the other end a totally atisfied and pleased owner.

It may just be the brushes. If you had the time to do yourself it probably does not require a full replace.

Yeah I figured I'm going to pay for being lazy. I don't like working on the car for more than 1 hr, and the alternator looks like a 2 hr job. I called around and everyone is pretty much the same so I guess they are quoting a remanufactured alternator from Bosch without exchange. But they keep the part to exchange for extra labor charges lol.

I just replaced mine $ 209 rebuid-no name alternator & regulator and $ 260 in labor. If I had the skill I would try. Lots of DYI on site.

Ms Kita... Is it running well now? How often do you drive that Chop, Cut, Rebuild Porsche of yours?

You should have THAT as your avatar! Send me a picture if you like and I'll make one for you!

Yes it'll probably take 2 hours to fit in but the book says 4 so they'll bill 4. I would try to do it myself, but 3 hours on a saturday afternoon better spent with my family. The porsche mechanics need to feed their families too
Thanks for the great advice.

Send your wife to the spa, take kids to Disneyland. You might get a better return on your investment.

My alternator replacement cost just increased. Vertexauto informed me today after several calls and emails that my core return was somehow damaged and they would only refund $100.00 of the charge and not the entire $200.00 as orginally promised or I could have it back. So much for sponsors! I am getting RIPPED-OFF!
My replacement cost just increased!!!

Ouch that sucks. Sorry to hear that. Although $260 for labor is great.

Well my problems just get better too. Seems the alternator is fine so diagnostics is pointing toward the DME. $2k there it goes!
