Wink 3.8 / 3.9 experiences

Hey guys-

I've seen the 9M stuff on here, and to be honest it's more than I have to spend right now. Has anyone else used other 3.8 or 3.9 kits? Can you share your experience?

I have the factory RSR bore ins, they are very nice, they come coated and w/ tapered wrist pins.

A much better bang for the buck is regear to /30 spec

Hey Bill

Have you dyno'd your car? How many miles do you have on it?

I'm trying to figure out how I want to build my car this winter!

I think there are better performance options before going for the displacement increase of the 102mm P&Cs.

Put that car on a diet and do the gearbox. It'll feel like a new car.

Chis, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I think we are both going the same place here.

I think I am also looking at a rebuild this winter. Geoffrey, you mentioned that there are better ways to add power than larger P&Cs. What do you mean? Bill, you mentioned regearing. Is this the transmission ratios?

I think the two options to get a significant HP increase are to either bolt on a TPC supercharger, or convert to motec ECU with some intake/exhaust refinements and custom mapping.

I dont think the 3.8 upgrade compares favourably on a $$/hp scale. It makes sense if you are doing a rebuild and are alrerady planning to replace your pistons/cylinders. At which time it is only about $1000 USD more. As an upgrade by itself it is hard to warrant the full expense for .2 liters.

In my opinion.

My personal choice would be TPC. Especially if you don't live close to any good porsche shops.

Yes, I had a chip configured on a dyno, the engine was built to RS spec, cams, valves etc.

Hp is in the neighborhood Porsche advertises, I don't feel that bandying dyno #s is at all useful. For comparison purposes, same car, same dyno, same conditions, yes, they can be useful

I already took 200 lbs off the car, put in the safety gear (and please don't add seat time - I go every opportunity that I can). It's just that if I'm going to be in there, it seams like it would worth it at this point. There's absolutely nothing wrong with my gearbox right now, so I'm not going to dump money into it. Though, my engine can use a rebuild within the next year or so....

As far as hp/torque is concerned,I'd like to see some real numbers (other than 9M!)

I did a 3.8 5 years ago. 272-276 at the wheels on a dynojet. Get some solid references on the mechanic before you proceed. Request parts list and labor estimates. Mine was a 7 month gestation period and over budget from a 'reputable' wrench.
Also, figure a cost for the engine management. I'm running Unichip (another story)

Also running:
mass air sensor
B&B exhaust
short gears 3,4,5
second oil cooler
a/c deleted, heater blower deleted, H&R, Fikse, Kuhmo's year 'round

allan

now considering a supercharger

A good site for 3.8 info is Steve Timmins at www.instant-g.com

That 930 engine swap is starting to sound like a bargain

Or...just swap in a 993 varioram...

About the gearbox...you go to shorter gears it will keep you in rpm range better and make it a much more responsive car. I looked at all these option and for what you get back from the 3.8 it didn't seem worth it. So I stuck a 993TT engine and 6 speed gear box in my car...now its like new and stupid fast.

Is there no one in the US that can perform the 325hp Motec conversion that 9M does for the 964? That's more hp than some 3.8s and it's "only" around $7K.
