Fixed Wing
Hey, I was wondering if anyone that has a fixed wing on their 964 would mind telling me a few things. I'm looking for one and trying to find which is the best to get. I'm also wondering if it's a very difficult thing to install yourself. Also, for a paintjob do you buy them already painted? Or is that something that needs to be done afterwards?
Thanks,
Kristian

After market stuff = They all suck for fit (MA Shaw, GT Racing, TRG, ebay off brands, etc) figure 3-5 hours to get it to fit on your car - another 3-5 hours to get the finish in primer to an acceptable level then what ever to paint, these are a pros times btw.
A stock RSA tail will take 1-3 hours to get it to line up correctly, disable the pop-up spoiler, etc. + what ever it takes to paint it and any repairs it needs
Just being realistic - the best of all worlds is a factory tail off of an RSA in your cars color - that matches the paint fade.
BTW, I have had a GT Racing RSR 3.8 tail - been there done that - looking at the possibility of a 993 RS tail for a replacement

Do you paint it yourself or do you take it somewhere? If you paint i yourself where can you get the matching paint?
Also are you happy that you added your wing? Did it improve your performance at all?

"Do you paint it yourself or do you take it somewhere? <Nope - i'm not the best painter so i farmed it out>
If you paint i yourself where can you get the matching paint? <local paint supply stores have all the gear and paint you need - PPG single stage is the best match for GP white and most flat porsche colors- Glasurate is the only one to use for metallics
Also are you happy that you added your wing? Did it improve your performance at all?
<that is very subjective - I did feel an inprovement int he cars handling but then again i put over 9K miles on it on the track>

I got my RS 3.6 bridge spoiler from Rennspeed. Fitted like a glove. Took an hour to remove the old wing, wires and motor. I had to drill the new wing and match up the fitting holes and fit with rubber washers to cushion it. I had mine prep'ed and painted by a local bodyshop.
Best place is MA Shaw and Rennspeed. IMHO
Cheers

GT Racing IROC tail on my car when I bought it. Bad fit as not enough time was spent fitting it to the car. Has cracks in it also. I second going with a factory wing.

to be fair - i think MA shaw has better quality than most of the CF makers out there. - there are good ones and there are bad ones - Porsche for instance is not above reproach either the orignal 3.8 tails were worse than the aftermarket ones from the "factory"
i am thinking of a 993 RS wing for my cup car - MA shaw is a possibility

Just as an data point, I installed a factory 993RS tail on my 993, when compared to the Shaw RSA tail on the 911; prep was roughly the same, the Shaw was an easier install, fit finish and installed appearance are comparable.

the MA shaw tail appears to be jsut the tail that you bolt to the existing desck lid - do they supply the deck lid as well?
my main goal is weight reduction + aerodynamics. the stock 964 Deck lid weighs 45 lbs +/-
i have no issues purschasing an MA shaw peice esp if the prep time is reasonable.

The Shaw RSA tail was 9# w/ grill but not mounting hardware, I think I used ~10x M8x15 button head ss bolts, washers and nuts for that.
the factory 993RS tail(not the RS/CS tail) is 7.5# + 2.25#s for the grill, + similar mounting hardware.
ea. of these was mounted on a stock bare steel deck lid, 911 and 993 respectively.

I have always heard that factory RSA tail and deck lid actually weigh more than the stock 964 deck lid with the power tail. I don't have the number to back that up though. Over on this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/245834-accurate-weight-table.html it says a stock C2 deck lid is 24lbs. I just put a factory decklid and Carrera tail (same as the RSA) on SC and I would have to guess it weighed in at 25-30lbs (I did not wieght it while it was in my hands).

The CF RSA wing and deck lid fitted to my car was of very high quality and the fit and finish is excellant. It's very light, - you can easily hold it all with just your finger and thumb. Guesstimate it's saving approx 35lb.
Helpfully I have no real idea where it was actually sourced. France I believe.
