to clean things up and install a 12 lb flywheel and a sound pad. i want to re-gear the transmission too but that may have wait a while.

seems like it would be easier to remove the bumper than raise the car so much higher. any tips would be appreciated.

Remove the bumper. It's easier.

BTW, when disconnecting the throttle cable. Disconnect the one on he left back side of the throttle body. The cable you see on the front coming from the right (passenger) is the cruise control cable.
