Default Misbehaving car..........dme relay ???

Car is misbehaving.....symptoms

Erractic idle
Occasionally stalls at juctions
Split second loss of power....like a blocked fuel supply

These symptoms are infrequent.....can happen 2-4 times on a single journey or not at all for a couple of weeks

Dme relay on the way out?
Fuel Filter??
Bad dist caps and rotors???

Any suggestions welcome

sounds similar to issues i used to have with my car for a while.

I replaced the o2 sensor and dist caps and rotors via my mech and had the system checked for codes (o2 failure flagged up) and reset. Drove fine for a while then started again to the point of undriveable.
Had a 24k service and my (new) mech pointed to the mass airflow sensor (MAF) as a common cause of such symptoms. Cleaning the tracks inside the unit was his solution. Method is in the archives here somewhere. Problems did'nt reappear and he said the MAF has in his experience been a culprit most times. Its the first thing i'd look too. Hope this helps.

Cheers
Giles.

the way i understand your description....it sound like what my car was initially doing befire it finally was un-drivable. turned out to be an unplugged spark plug wire on the primary dist.

disconnect the primary coil driver (so it's only running on the secondary coil and dist) )and see if it stops the eratic behavior

Thanks for all the suggestions

I know the 964 has an air flow meter

I plan to change the.....
fuel filter
replace the DME
replace dist caps and rotor-arms........they need done anyway
clean the airflow meter
clean the ISV

and i hope this cures the problem....if not will pursue the other suggestions posted here

You could try checking the ground at the battery. A flaky ground can cause alot of spurious running problems. Doesn't cost anything to unbolt the ground cable clean up any corrosion and reinstall.
