Replacing the stock radio head unit?

What head unit do you recommend (for proper size and no skipping)?
Does anyone make a kit for wiring and installation? If so, who and where can I get it? And will the installation kit be specific to a new head unit or will it work with any new head unit?

The car is borderline an on-going project car, and is currently not in condition to drive to a stereo installation place, so it looks like I’ll be doing the installation my self, in my garage.

Did you need a specal wiring harness to adapt it to your car?

Indycam 03-29-2006 04:40 PM

Well thats hard to say . Are you going to delete the factory amp ? Are you good at wireing ? Stock speakers ? New speakers ? New amp ?

SSpray 03-29-2006 04:43 PM

I was hoping to just pull out the old radio and plug in the new one.
I can do some wiring…simple splicing and things like that.

I am not looking to remove or add anything else.

I'll go check and get back to you .

OK, thank you very much!

Greatly appreciated!

When I finally replace my vintage  Blaupunkt Reno 2 I think I'm taking this route. No affil but I've read good things about these folks on this here forum. As well, someone said they were able to supply the wiring interface required to go from the new Becker / Porsche stuff to the the old, obsolete Blaupunkt stuff. I've never looked into it any further, but a phone call to these guys might be worth a try...and the decks look as if they belong in an older 911, unlike some of the blingin' Japanese head units. JMO, of course.

Thanks for the lead! I'll check it out.
Anyone else have any info about wiring adapter kits?

"Anyone else have any info about wiring adapter kits?"
I've put a few head units into cars , boats , boxes and have never found the need for an adapter for the wires .

SSpray 03-30-2006 12:56 PM

ok, well that is good news!

Does your car have an factory amp under the seat ?
If it does and you are going to replace the head unit , you need to wire the head unit to it or rewire around it .

"ok, well that is good news!"
I didn't think it was good or bad , I just wire them up . Its going to be more effort than just pluging it in .

Oh, I took it as just plug and play.

I am not sure if there is an amp under the seat. What seat should I look under?

Indycam 03-30-2006 05:24 PM

Its under the pass side , I think .

SSpray 03-30-2006 11:39 PM

It is, and I have it.
