Default Oil Cooler removal

I am in the process of removing the entire oiling system, and have gotten up to the front fender and the oil cooler. Has anybody taken one of these out? It looks like I might have to take off the front bumper to get it off. I've searched the web, and the workshop manual and there is no description of the process.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know a thing about this but I'm anxiously awaiting your full write up with pictures. My oil cooler is leaking and I'm taking the whole thing apart when I do my 15K service in the next few months.

Don't be shy about pictures...

I would take the bumper cover off in any case. It's easy to do and makes access to the coolers on each side much easier. While I haven't had the stock cooler off, I did add the aux cooler to the other side and tie it into the stock cooler. I took off the bumper. (Bumper cover removal takes maybe 15 minutes.)

The oil cooler is held on by two rubber feet that slide over two studs on the bottom. The top has a bracket from the side of the cooler end tank to the underside of the headlight bracket. Remove the bolt to the bracket, disconnect the two main oil lines, disconnect the wiring to the fan and to the temperature switch in the cooler itself and pull the cooler up and over the studs. If your car has a tiptronic transmission, the cooler is fitted on the inside of the oil cooler and you'll need to remove the lines as well.

As pointed out, removal of the front bumper cover is helpful.

Sundog,
As Geoffrey has described , it really is a straightfoward job. I would think it would take longer to remove the front bumper than the oil cooler !!
I changed my cooler about 2 years ago and it took about an hour on a lift , bumper in place if that helps .I also replaced the temperature sender while I was there.

Good luck

Geoff

Thanks for all your help. I got it off this evening by taking off the bumper cover, and it came off pretty easy, once I figured out how to detach the ATF cooler without disconnecting the ATF lines. I've had all the leaks on this baby that I care to deal with, so not undoing any unnecessary connections.

I attached a picture of the cooler. It looks like there is maybe 20% cooling are left unclogged. But since it has had at least 2 bearings through it, it is going in the trash bin anyways.

Now to get some new oil lines!
