Note: A friend of mine found it for me. I paid the local dealer in Denver to perform a pre-purchase inspection. His comment was "it is as good as it can be for a used 964. Too bad he car had the usual rust spots at the windshield corners. Make sure you don't rely on dealers' pre-purchase inspection only. Due to the distance I bought the car without seeing it before (trusted my friend and the dealer inspection, both missed those rust spots too).

your assessment of the interior quality (1-10, 10 being highest): 9.5 - not quite literally flawless, but the leather is very clean and strong and the carpets are in terrific shape. Found a couple small issues with the rear seats (which I do need since I hope to be able to drive my two small children around in this at least a little bit), but that's really it for the interior.
your assessment of the exterior quality (1-10, 10 being highest): 9 - couple small dings and scratches, not quite as solid as the interior but certainly shows much less wear than you'd expect on a nearly 20 year old car. All the prior owners garaged it, and it really shows.

The A/C is completely nonfunctional, and there's one dead motor in the power adjustments for the driver's seat. I also found a couple small squawks while driving it home to Virginia from Detriot, namely that the oil level gauge doesn't work and the brakes have that intermittent low-speed squeal from time to time. On the other hand, I knew about all these issues (expect the oil level guage) before I bought the car, and I felt that the price I paid fairly reflected the $2-3K it likely will take to get these issues rectified.

It was in great shape when I got it. Since number ratings are subjective, there was an ABS light on, no tach, and I had to manually put up the rear spoiler when I got it (happened on the way to PPI). $500 was taken off the negotiated price and it was all resolved with a new ABS relay for $100. The hood was resprayed at some point. I noticed a small set of rust bubbles about half the size of a dime by the windsheild during the first wash that will cost another ~$500 to fix ($1,200 to make perfect but I plan on driving it).

This car needs a little bit of work. The interior is ok. There are a lot of loose items in the vehicle that need to be screwed back down. I'm not quite sure of the engine yet. It had been sitting in a friend's driveway for the past 3 years and after hounding the guy to sell it to me for about as long, he finally did.
I couldn't beat the price. And besides, I love doing restorations. Everything will be looked over eventually. I was surprised to know that after 3 years of sitting, it started right up. It's blowing some white smoke, and a little blue smoke, but I think it's because I put too much oil in the vehicle.
So, I think I can get this car looking and sounding pretty great in a few months. I don't mind getting my knuckles dirty, as I'm about done rebuilding a 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser with a Chevy V8.
The bad thing is that there was only about 4 pieces of paperwork that came with the car. The car wasn't a garage queen, which is fine with me. I'll use it for the next few years to enjoy the San Diego sun...and quietly turn the porsche into a track machine without the wifey finding out!!

That's an awesome deal @ $4K!
Can anyone please shed some light as to why the 964 prices are so drastically down compared to older 911s? After reading some posts in this thread and the prices I've been seeing from poking around in Craigslist and/or eBay, it seems like mid to high teens will get you a decent 964.
Having said that, are the prices still plummeting? Are they bound to rebound? Just trying to figure out why they seem to have depreciated more than their older siblings.

Book on 964's is still decent. Many just aren't selling. That white 1990 that was in Henderson sold for $13700. There was a linen gray met. one that sold for $13600.
