I believe the splitter does more for stability and to minimize lift. In the front removing lift is the issue. The rear wing adds downforce.

To Larry and Scott (and others)
I've often noticed pictures with what appear to be factory cars (sometimes race cars) with tails and no splitters... both 3.8 wings and RSA type wings. The RSA didn't come with a splitter from Porsche so the old "have to add a splitter if you add a tail" argument seems to be a question on the 964 based cars.
I personally hate the look of the 964 with a splitter. Love it on a 993...
I'd like to discuss the splitter issue more ... should we take it to its own posting?

On the earlier cars you needed the front lip if you added the wing or you needed to drop the front end slightly when adding a rear wing. I believe the same holds true for the 964 and 993. The splitter does quite a bit to stabilize the car at high speeds, effectively does nothing at slower speeds. I personally like the looks myself and find my car to be considerably more stable at higher speeds. Especially over 110 mph you can really feel the difference and it makes for a very smooth ride. Without the splitter the front end darts around and lifts.
The real splitters do not have a center section and we used to call the ones that went straight across the front Air dam's the splitter actually uses the open section to create a negative pressure pulling the front end down the air dam uses the air to push the air down but creates more drag.
These are the factory splitters and find they are almost unnoticeable. Some people like to paint them to the color of the car I think they blend in better in black.

I'll certainly agree with you about the looks of the factory pieces... very nice and as you mentioned, almost unnoticeable.
I appreciate your input regarding the splitters/air dams. I suppose, what's left is to go out and see for myself by testing the darn things. Guess I'll start by trying a wing without splitters and see what we have. (this will be on a car with 700/900# springs) I'll start a thread once I've installed.
Thanks...
