I recently installed a new set of Infinity Reference rear speakers and thought I'd share the joy.


Here we go:

Fold both the rear seats forwards.
Remove the covers over the child-restraint hooks (if any).
Remove the 4 screws (circled in green) holding the rear panel in place.
Use a flat-blade screwdriver to pop the speaker covers off (gently as they are brittle and can break).

Pull the rear panel forwards and rotate the top edge forwards to tip it forwards and upside-down on the rear storage space.
I did not remove the seatbelts but if you want to install the speakers on your workbench, you'll have to.

Here's a view of the rear of the speaker.
Gently pull the speaker wires off the tabs (smaller connector is negative, larger connector is positive).
Unscrew the 4 screws holding each speaker in from the top of the rear panel and gently remove by pulling out the top of the rear panel.

I bought the speakers (Infinity Reference 6412cfp) speakers new from eBay.

Install the new speakers (they drop right in - a perfect fit) and screw in with the same 4 screws - screw holes line up just right.
Reconnect the speaker wires - tabs are the correct size.

The only problem is that the stock grills don't fit - the new speaker is slightly smaller (about 4 mm end-to-end and 8 mm side-to-side).
To resolve this, I used black weatherstripping foam (4.8mm thick, 9.5 mm wide).
I split the foam lengthwise (to make it 4.75mm wide) and stuck a piece on each of the tend edges of the speakers (green arrows).
This allowed the stock grills to snugly fit on (I tried velcro and it did not work well).

The sound is better but not great yet as the front speakers are in even worse shape (crumbling apart) and I started work on them today.

Very nice. I was wanting to do this lately. I think I will now and I may even copy your exact speaker type. I've had Reference speakers all around in my old A6 and they sounded really good.

Marc, exactly what are you putting in front, Infinity also? I have a new 50Wx4 Panasonic and want to replace the 4 main speakers also, please post what you do up front!

And with such an artistically inclined left thumb, after this instalment,.. as James Brown says," For you to move,..How will you groove",.. Compaired to yesterday’s speakers, those of today have to be driven with a considerable push behind them, in other words they have to work, and not with extra volume but with clean amplified power, to reproduce the most difficult notes, the "big bad base", the heart and soul, verses the mid and high notes which are far easier to obtain. If, this is worthless info please disregard it. I don’t know your set-up but you may have to install an amplifier to feed these," WATTS", hungry Infinity Speakers,.. "For you to move,..How will you groove",.Alpine makes some nice easy to fit almost anywhere 4 X+-120’s,..Check your local dealer and ask other members,. And if, nothing else, thanks for some nice photos and text, and great looking left thumb!,. Just as I more or less had forgotten about upgrading the speakers I'm confronted with this nice DIY guide. I'll have to reconsider it now, tx Marc, you obviously don't want to roll down the slope just by yourself, you like to have company

Thanks to Marc for the pics, etc. but if you don't want to you don't have to flip up the seatback. Just pry up the grills, unscrew the 4 screws and disconnect the wires. It requires a "stubby" screwdriver for the rear-most screws but other than that it takes 10 minutes. My stock grills went right back on. Still no bass though; I think you'll have to get subs for that. The infamous Rod Birch himself was in Lexington recently. Anyone see this thread on the 993 board?

Gary - I am putting Infinity Reference 50.5CS 5.25" component speakers in the front. I got the passenger door done today (about 5 hours) and will post details once I am done. Front is more involved than the rear due to the cross-over etc.


Steve - the holes are from the child car seat restraint anchors. See here for Bates' write-up of the installation procedure and below for some pictures I took.

Speakers cost me US$32.27 from eBay.


Kris - I'm going down, I'm taking you all with me.


Chris is right - the rear shelf does not have to be removed but I found it much easier to take the extra five minutes to remove it rather than fumble underneath without being able to see to plug in the wires.
