Hey I just posted my "100th post",. Must be an indication to something good for you, let us know and read my" how to odometer thing" some folks have been kind enough to add advice to it. Always something to learn, espeacially in the "World Of Used Porsche 911/964!",.. Still me,.. Marc A.
PS. Page one of your thread has my,"serious" advice given to you. My serious advice here, don't play too much tomorrow, you may have to buy both, or only one if you play too much,..Behind your head sleep, 250 Tough Ponies, BE VERY COOOOL!!.....Marc A.

BOth those cars look great on the website. I especially like the 10 spoke wheels on the C2, but i like the Tan interior on the C4.
One thing you might consider checking is the serial number on the engine of the C2. If it is a later build 91, it would have the gasket seal on the heads whereas the 90 will be gasketless regardless. Of course by now any problem should have reared its head (no pun) but one more factor to consider nonetheless.
What part of Raleigh are you?

The difference in mileage does not seems significant, nor does the difference in price.
Both will be expensive to maintain relative to a newer or simpler car so plan on $2000 - $3000/year in up keep alone.
They drive very differently though and that should really be the basis of your decision (assuming both pass the PPI). If you drive in foul weather or snow, the C4 is a good choice - but if you plan to track alot, most agree the C2 may be a better choice (although many track and/or race C4's).

Do you really need AWD? If not, why haul around all the extra weight if you don't have to?
Get the engine serial # off the 91 then do a search here and find out if it has head gaskets or not. Also, get a look at the service records for each car. The previous owner of your chosen car could make or break your ownership experience.
And as the buying guide authors always say, "buy the newest example you can afford."

John,
I live in Mebane, NC. There is a small dealer over in Burlington that has a '90 C2 Cab manual w/77k. I would consider it if I hadn't just bought my '95 993. I'm not a dealer, just wanted to pass on the info. Let me know if you want the contact numbers.

I almost bought an '89 C4 in Guards Red last winter. In fact, I put a deposit on the car only to have it sold to someone else who was faster with the cash. I eventually bought a '91 C2 in Black with very low mileage. In retrospect I am glad for getting the C2, if only because it represents less complexity.
FWIW, I have never looked back and wondered if the C4 would have been a better choice.

You guys who have C2's have got to try someone's C4 sometime - don't know what you're missing! I had a C2 for several months to drive around and it was fun to compare the two cars (actually three, since I have two C4's ). The extra weight is a non-issue regarding how the car feels. If you're concerned with hauling weight, drive with a 1/3-full tank, or leave your friend at home!

Sorry about not sending a reply back in a while.
I took a trip to NY for Turkey Day.
Drove the Jetta TDI fully loaded and averaged 45 MPG with traffic (In NJ & DE) and cruising over 85 MPH. I Noticed traffic cruised faster in the right lane on the NJ Tpke.
One tank each way did the trip.
I decided to pass on the P-car for now becayuse I do not want to run into a situation where I am stuck with a large maint bill
Priorties right now is the family , house, paying down some bills.
I'll just enjoy what I have right now.
Thanks for your advice everyone and I probaby will be looking again in the next year or so and maybe the newer models will come down in price.

maybe get a 951. you can get a good one for $8000-10,000. in 3 years i've only had one maintenance issue, which was a hose. not that i haven't spent money, but it was all upgrading...new sway bars, short shift, chips, dash, 968 mirrors, etc.
