Replace Engine Tin?
During the process of rebuilding my motor, I have noticed that the engine tin particularly the pieces above the exhaust and at the back of the engine by the transmission are pretty rusted out.
I was wondering if other people during their rebuilds replaced any of their engine covers with new ones, or just left the old paper thin ones in place?
And if you did were the parts expensive?
Thanx,
Kirk

I have done this, or at least I replaced 3 or 4 that had basically been eaten by a giant rat with a penchant for metal - the rest I had cleaned up and powdercoated (along with the new bits). I still actually have one piece installed which looks in perfect condition (due to the clean-up, rustproofing and coating) with a small hole in it, but there has to be some limit to a) the cost and b) the anality of it
I think from memory I spent around £400 on assorted tinware, or around $750 in today's money.

Cheapest and best long term solution is the powder coating. This is what I do for engine rebuilds. There may be a little pitting from the previous rust, but it still looks 1000% better and is WAY less expensive than new tin...

I was cheap and was happy when Bob just had mine cleaned up and powder coated. Mine were covered with surface rust but otherwise in pretty good shape. I believe my car has spent all its 75000 miles in CA and most in the desert parts or away from the coast. There are benefits to no salt and a dry climate.

Kirk,
Greetings fom the Wet Coast!
Definitely worth replacing to improve looks of engine. I purchased a complete used set in excellent condition from LA Porsche Dismantlers http://www.911pcar.com/ for about $200 a couple of years ago to replace the rusty ones on my '90 C2. You do have to be careful that you emphasize that you will not accept anything that is rusty as sometimes their quality control is not great. Parts Heaven http://www.partsheaven.com/ might also be able to supply at acompettive price. By the way if you do order from the US try to use USPS vs. Fedex or UPS to avoid their outrageous brokerage fees.
Good luck!
