Default Broken valve cover

When bleeding brake fluid about 2 weels ago, I found my left lower valve cover was broken at the edge, and gasket was extruded and seeping oil.

It was a new aftermarket cover and installed during my engine rebuild, and has only less than 1000km on it! What a quality!

So I ordered a new set of Imagine Auto valve cover kit and installed today. When I took the old cover (not really OLD) out, there was another cracking on the top! (see photos below). Anyone has similar experience? Looks like there are some issues during casting process that make the thin edge fragile...spent $300 for a set and last less than 1000km.....

Imagine auto covers looks much stronger and nicer, and also cheaper....I think it won't crack again.....hopefully...

Did you find the broken off piece? For $300, I would have attempted a repair. The IA piece looks great.

Patrick,

That is a great looking set of valve covers! I had a look at them at:

http://imagineauto.com/Merchant2/mer...=IAVALVECOVERS

And the other ones mentioned here at:

http://www.hargettprecision.com/964ValveCovers.htm

I am in the middle of tearing down my engine to rebuild it and I am considering replacing my stock magnesium valve covers with one of the aluminum replacements. (As I understand the magnesium ones tend to warp easily and leak)

I would be curious to hear any body elses experiences with the different brands, and which ones are causing problems.

Springer,

Don't know where those broken pieces gone, although I had undertray fitted. For $300, I will ask the seller if I can claim a warranty!

Kirk,

Didn't know Hargett product before, so I just ordered IA one. Let's wait and see if new covers can stop the leak. My original covers are also magnesium, and they were correded inside the gasket grooves, make it difficult to seal tightly. Now they are decorations on my shelf (I painted them red..HA )
My broken one has no brand, although they got Porsche part# on it.

So you used the Imagine Auto pieces to replace the lower covers, but what about the upper ones?

The upper valve covers will be here soon. We are just waiting on the CEC casting. Also these Valve covers are CEC Aluminum. So they will not warp like the magnesium. They also have the updated 964 gasket like all of the other cars here. Well worth the money. Anybody want to order more let me know

Unhappy

I recently got new factory covers installed in the car... aluminum... hope they hold well...

Patrick,
Any chance those were overtorqued?? Does not really matter at this point...

Kirk,
There was no upper covers available (except expensive Porsche OE) at the time of my rebuild, and they are less likely to leak, so I just changed gaskets. They are currently fine.

Wachuko,
I believe my technician had follow the torque on workshop manual, and the right cover is still good. But anything can happen....
