How many miles? The Boges didn't last very long and if they haven't been replaced in 40k miles I would change them.

Go with the Bilstein HD's and H&R springs you won't believe the difference.

If you do the install yourself you can save a bit. The corner balance and alignment should run about $250 most shops get $750 to install CB and aligne.

The improvement over stock suspension especially in the turbo is worth every penny and more.

It's like skiing. Some people like to bomb down the hill others traverse. The lazy ones stop every 50 feet or so. It's all up to you. But like anything addictive you have to know whats best for yourself. IMO suspension work should be the starting point. Making your car faster without improving handling or braking is a waste of time and money. Start slow and figure out what works for your needs.

The first thing to go on a shock is the high frequency damping - just a little softness for the first fraction of an inch. I call it "impact harshness", the feeling that things are just a little off when you go over expansion joints or hit sharp bumps. Drive a car with fresh shocks, and you will see the difference.

It is not dangerous at this stage, but if you drive a Porsche for the driving experience, I can't imagine putting on a lot of miles with less than optimal ride.

You can wait until the low frequency damping deteriorates. The car starts wallowing, and it is dangerous at that stage.

What I have found is that as the stock shocks get old they simply get HARD. My 1st 964 rode like a buckboard until I put in new Bilsteins (and new H&R's). My current car is just like it now, plus it has H&R lowering springs which make it even WORSE! I'll be replacing at least the shocks in the spring, most likely with some new Bilsteins. It seems to be age of the shocks, not mileage or leaks as both cars had 40K miles on them..

What do you mean even worse? worse that you have worn shocks AND lowering springs?

Yes, the shorter, stiffer springs seem to exacerbate the problem..

Default What's the big deal about "coilovers"?

So, you can get 4 Bilsteins or Koni shocks for between US $660-$750, you can get various springs for between $250 and $360 for a set of 4. You can get spring/shock combos starting at $1000 for Koni/H&R.

So why do "coilovers" from H&R, et al, start at $1800 and go up from there? What's the diff between coilovers and putting a spring/shock together yourself? Don't they all have adjustable spring perches?

I believe the coilovers are the complete assembly including struts and have more adjustment than just spring pre-tensioning/height adjust. The shocks that come with them are custom valved in some cases, and according to a race car builder I have 100% confidence in, they are (in the case of H&R's coilovers) valved horribly. I did the H&R sport springs and HD Bilsteins on his suggestion (he said that was an "ok" setup) and was quite happy with it. A new alignment and the car handles and runs great (for my buddy, who bought it right after!)...
