Post See Anything Wrong? (photos)

I'm having this one inspected this week.

It's a '91 C4, and it has the updated flywheel and the engine serial number is outside the "leaking" range.

Anyway, I thought some of you sharp-eyed guys out there might pick up a detail or two in these photos...see anything wrong/unusual or whatever?

It's got updated wheels, mirrors, and stereo, plus window tinting. 47k miles, and he's asking $29.5k.

Man,

That does look like a nice car!! I guess you beat me to it, you will probably end up buying the 964 before me.

Wheels are the 16"s (as opposed to 17" Cups). Apart from that there is nothing that catches my eye.

I really like the colour combination, very nice with the beige leather. Unfortunately that is quite hard to find here in Europe.

I hope all goes well if you buy it, let us know the whole experience.

Best of luck

Robert,

If this car is midnight blue, then it looks almost identical to my midnight blue 92 C2 coupe with cashmere (tan) interior. I've only seen two other midnight blue C2's on the internet, not counting this one, and I've never seen another one in person. Needless to say, I LIKE the color combo.

I can't really pick out anything wrong with the car in the photos. It does have a rear wiper, which mine doesn't have. Mine also doesn't have black piping around the seats. There doesn't appear to be any wear on the driver's seat bolster, which is a common wear area.

The seats are not the "sport" seats, which have bigger bolsters that are set closer together. That may be a good thing depending on your size. Mine has the sport seats, and I'm pretty thin so I pit perfectly into them. If I were any wider, I think it would be uncomfortable.

Riccardo must have better eyes than me b/c I can't tell that those wheels are 16 inch.

Have you seen the car in person yet? It sounds pretty good on paper, especially with the flywheel and engine issues already addressed. The mileage also is relatively low.

If you paid $29.5K, the car passes a PPI, and the paint job and interior are in good condition, then I would say you paid a fair price. Not a great deal but not a bad one either. Aside from the flywheel upgrade, the Cup rims (about $1200) and side mirrors are nice cosmetic upgrades which I haven't seen on many 89-91 964's.

Hope this car checks out for you...

Looks very nice. Love that midnight blue! Before I purchased my car, I lost out (by a few hours!) on a similar car that sold for $26.5k. It was a C2, though.

If the PPI checks out, go for it (especially if you can negotiate him down a bit). However, if the PPI reveals problems, don't ignore them because (1) the car is beautiful, (2) you're dying to get a 964, and (3) you're sick and tired of looking around. In searching for P-cars discipline is crucial.

Good Luck,

Jon

The C4 looks very good, and the colour combination is very nice. Look at the gear shift, because many of 964 with beige leather interior have the leather around the gear shift damaged.

From these photos the car looks in perfect conditions! Not easy to find beige leather interior in good conditions.

It's impossible for me to tell something about the price, because here in Europe Porsche are a little less cheaper.

(swiss market) www.autoscout24.ch
or
(german market) www.autoscout24.de

But in any case do a PPI, 50$-100$ is nothing compared to the price of the car.

You write: "...the engine serial number is outside the "leaking" range."
Can you tell me were I can found the "leaking range".

Good luck

I believe the "leaking range" is documented in Bruce Anderson's book as well as in Up-Fixin' and Panorama articles. Maybe in one of Bruce's Excellence columns too. I can't look it up right now, but if you'll email me as a reminder I'll get the numbers for you.

Looks like a real beauty. Love that color combo.
A common problem that I've noticed on many 964s is the lower section of the front bumper
usually right below the license plate gets badly dented (actually pushed up) from scraping on curbs. It's hard to tell from the picture you have provided but to me it does look like this car may have that problem.
Good luck in your search!

Looks good to me. Get the PPI done. The price sounds reasonable to me, but it wouldn't hurt to haggle anyway...the economy is bad and sports cars apparently aren't moving well.

Good Luck,

Hello All,

The engine number from which the leaks should have been fixed is 62M06836 (just look at the archives).

Cheers

Nice car looks like a good choice. One small item I would check that seems to be overlooked in the PPI's, take a careful look at the guage faces for any signs of cracking or peeling. Sometimes it just looks like a slightly different transparency to the gauge lights where the film is separating. It seems like 964's in hot climes are prone to this problem, its a pain when it happens and it can cost you to replace/repair. Also run the climate control through all the settings including with the fan barely on and listen for noises or squeaks in the fans. This is a great car, you are going to love it.

A follow-up...

(1) Inspection by Yark Porsche in Toledo, Ohio, revealed weak front and read hood struts, a cracked fog light lens, and a (to quote the service manager) "very, VERY minor oil leak." He said it was only even noticed when they removed the bottom cover, and it was far too small to try and locate, much less spend the money to seal. He said, "I don't want to say a very minor oil leak like this is normal, but it is very typical. It is not dripping or wet, but there is a very tiny leak somewhere."

(2) The owner agreed to repair the struts and lens. I got my financing completed, and bought a plane ticket. All I have to do now is hope the car is everything it appears to be, both in photos and descriptions. I did tell the owner that I would not buy the car without a personal inspection and test drive.

(3) I'm going to fly up there a week from Saturday. If the car is okay, I'll drive it home (680 miles) and begin what I hope is a long and enjoyable relationship with my first Porsche. On the other hand, if the car isn't what I expect, or seems less that what I want, I'll be out $250 or so. Better that loss than to accept a car I don't feel good about.

I'm trying very hard not to get overly excited about the car. I'm trying to stay objective, and not sink $29k into an ***-engined money pit However, it's hard. I look at the photos and, well, you know what I'm talking about.

Wish me luck. I will, of course, share my results, good or bad, with you all ASAP.
