Has anyone had to replace their door straps?

Dear All,
I think they are called 'door straps', however please correct me if I am wrong. My doors seem to swing wide open (when opening) without having the option of being partially opened. I have been told that the straps are 'stretched' and should be replaced... (again is this correct?)

Again thank you in advance.

Frank

Hopefully the two door stay bolts have come loose and you haven't destroyed the inner metal? Did your door ever make a clicking sound when opened?

Frank F 09-29-2005 03:53 AM

No sound at all. Just that it swings wide open.

Yep, it's a fairly easy job too. They don't stretch, there's a rubber block inside which deteriorates over time.

You'll be amazed at the difference; 2 very clear stop points with the new strap in place.

The hardest part of the job is removing the door trim panel as you have to access the strap from inside the door.

It's called the door check strap, by the way.

So this will repair the clicking? By chance would you have a part #?

Wow - great write-up Marc; didn't spot it at the time but that's a perfect guide to changing the part.

I didnt even know mine were broken until I read this thread - I have no intermediate stopping point when the doors open. Now have another job on the list!

Can someone verify for me the parts numbers for the parts needed to replace the check straps (as mentioned in Marc's DIY, he ordered them as a package from type911.co.uk but I'd like to try to order from Sunset or one of the usual suspects)?
In Illustration 804-00 in PET I found:
-door arrester 964 537 057 00
-screw M6x 14 900 075 374 02 x2
-bolt 911 531 275 00
-safety clip 999 166 008 02

Can anybody verify this?
Brian

I ordered what you call a "door arrester" last night from Pelican. $26 plus shipping. I think the bolts, etc., were part of the "kit." Yes, your part no. is correct (Pelican's part number is M-537-057-00). Pelican calls it a "door check strap."
