Question Greasy around the Crankshaft pully....

Hello again,

Yesterdag I had a topic about a possible leaking powersteering pump.
I told proudly that my 964 is oil dry...
I ment that no oil drops are on the engine, leaking on the exhaust or on something else.

Tis morning, my wife and I drove a nice couple of miles, because the weather was dry and sunny [This is not normal for the Netherlands, usually it rains] and the car drove nice. But sometimes I smell some oil inside the car, just sometimes for a few seconds, only when we use the car longer then a a few hours and gets hot.
The engine does not leak oil, [ a saw a lot of 964 who did] no oil drops on the exhaust.

When I look at the engine, to check the tension of the altenator belts, I see that down under, near the crankshaft pully a greasy spot.

I know that the camshaft chain box left en right are a little greasy to, but is it possible that this oil is leaking [leaking is a to big word] to the pully and blows his self around an creates a greasy spot, or is the crankshaft seal broke and is it the one who gives the greasy spot???

Tell me when somebody knows out of experience, may be I get it fixed by warranty, I have warranty untill 1/2 March.

Please answer, or tell me if I am to precisely with my 964 and the things I found are normal to you all.

Nice Sunday you all,
Arjan

Talking

Dear Arjan,
It is not possible to give definitive answers over cyberspace. In fact it is impossible. If you took some digital photos maybe better advice could be given but I have to be honest. There are many seals in the area you speak of. Anyone could be leaking or all could be leaking (maybe weeping would be a better idea). The only way to make an informed answer is to have the engine completely cleaned. Spotless, and then cover the areas with say flour, or talcum powder and watch very carefully the areas which darken first.
I am afraid this one is up to you to monitor and make the decision on what to do. If you are really worried and want to get these leaks/weeps fixed you will have to drop the engine and have it all repaired. Seeing as you have warranty I would approach the dealer and ask them to fix the engine,
Ciao,
Adrian

Arjan;

You know it might be a good idea to get or borrow a digital camera, so that we could help you narrow done some of your concerns and problems. The crankshaft nose seal could leak however there are more common areas. A relative quick way to inspect your heating system and possible source for your oil smell, is to remove your alternator and look at the condition of the top of your engine. If some one has done an overfill, or general condition for grease or grime.

Adrian has a good point to clean your engine, give it a wash and scrub. Wash your heat exchangers. Monitor your leaks. Good luck

Wink

Thanks guys,

I do the 'cleaning thing'this week.
I did the powder already on the p-steering pump area, that works fine.
I'll go to the dealer and talk to him, he is a well known specialist.
I have a warranty on paper untill 14 March 2002.
May be he is nice to me and wants to help.

Thanks for your input, could be that this spot was tipical for a 964.

Thanks

Greetings,
Arjan

O.k. guys,

I went today to the delivering dealer, and showed them the wet greasy spots.

I said to them that 'I don't demand anything' but talk in a nice way about a warranty case.

O.k. he said, you have warranty on your engine and gearbox, so I will repair it, no problem!

They had just build out a engine from a well used 964 from a costumer to repair, and I saw the same greasy spots on that engine.
Wet around the powersteering pump cover, camshaft chain covers and pully.

He said 'this is normal for us' we will fix it under warranty!

I bring my car in April, they can easy repair it without stress.
I will be patient.

Thanks guys for input.

Arjan,

I know they sound very bnice and friendly, but is it wise to take the car there in April?? Your warranty will have expired by then and they could, potentially, just turn around and say its your problem.

Also, you haven't told us where the leak is originating from. I'm curious as I too think not to have any leaks but I can still smell some burnt oil every so ofetn.

PS: Nice rear shot of your car!

Cool

O.k., may be in a big city you have the risk to experiece this kind of reaction, this dealer is a well known dealer wich's name is very important to keep high.

Bring the car in April is because they have very much work to do right now, and I go in April a week to Canada, so they have the car for a week to work on.
We both have someting.
I trust them fully, there just 5 miles from.

The leaking spots they repair, are not fully known, but I tell everybody what it was after the repair.
They replace also the power steering belt then, because they have to open up that area.

You all hear from me in April/May about this point, o.k.

Cool

Hello guys [and Melissa also]

I promised that I came back with the answers on the greasy spots on the engine.

Next week I fly to the USA, and my 964 will be back at the dealer for the promised warranty things so they have more time to repair without stress.

They repair the oil spot around the power steering pump[and replace the drive belt too], the leak at the chain covers, and the 'greasy spot' around the crankshaft pully. [ the one which drives all the belts]

When I come back I let you know what it was, Riccardo and others who are interested.

See you,

Arjan

Cool

O.k.,

Just before I leave the country, and fly to the USA, I have the answers on the greasy spot around the crankshaft pully.

The dealer phoned my yesterday, to tell me what the plan to repair, while I am on travel, and one of the things is a new oil seal bihind the power steering belthouse on the right side of the engine. They replace also the power steering belt to.
The wet spot on the camshaft covers is not as bad it looked like. They say, when the replaced the gaskets of the covers, it will probably start to go wet in a while, and it's just a drop of oil which I can wipe back and comes back after a few thousand km's. So I told them to let it be.

The crackshaft thing was not as bad it looked like, it was a small gasket near the pully, and the oil was blown around by the pully.

So again, a good car I have bought, that's fur sure.

Hope the info is ineresting for everyone.

Till soon,

Arjan
