Question Replace electric spoiler with stationary tail?

What are my options on replacing my electric (automatic) spoiler on a 89 1/2 ('90 body)with a stationary tail? I prefer the look mostly.

Also, what will come of the electric warning lights if the electric spoiler is removed? Many thanks for your help on this one.

Dear Bob,
Tom Sharpes developed a simple bypass circuit to fix this problem up. I reckon the 911SC/RS tail looks best on a 964. Obviously the final choice is yours and there are plenty to choose from. Genuine and aftermarket.

In case you didn't know, the Tom Sharpes article is available in the Tech section on the Pelican Parts web site. There was also a similar article in a recent issue of "9 Magazine".

This topic has also been discussed in previous threads on this forum.

p.s. I have the MA Shaw "smooth one piece" version of the RS America wing and it looks great.

Bob, I have the RS America tail and decklid on my '91 Cab. I bought the tail with the decklid so I didn't have to drill my C2 decklid. Plus I wanted to be able to change back easily. Another factor was the aerodynamics. The RSA tail was put on the C2 by the factory without any added spoilers or splitters on the nose, so I felt it would be correct. I did need to make a simple bracket to attach the decklid to the existing hinges, and jumper the electrical socket to fool the dash warning light. All this is in the archives. Good Luck, Roy

Dear Roy,
All you actually did was add 10lbs top the weight of your cab. I prefer the look of the 911SC/RS rear fixed wing modified by Porsche and installed on the 964C4RS. Finding one is the problem.

Dear Roy,
I am the opposite I always put a good 5kgs on when I try that diet. I do not like the RSA fixed tail but who cares anyway. It is what you like that counts.

I have the MA Shaw RSA tail on my '91 C2 cab (see the pictures using the link below). I read somewhere that the MA Shaw RSA tail is 14 lbs. lighter than the factory RSA tail (because it's all fiberglass, rather than fiberglass and rubber). I'm not sure about the weight of a fiberglass tail vs. the factory tail and motor, but I would expect the fiberglass to be lighter.

Do a search for "tail" and you'll find some other strings discussing putting fixed wings on 964s.

Good luck!

Still searching... I see that Pelican has spoilers, but they are only through 1989 bodystyles... Mine is a '89 1/2 (90 body, auto-spoiler)... I want the fixed spoiler. Any ideas?

Forget the RSA wing, go for the RSR3.8 style wing
My RSA with RSR wing and be the envy of all the lowered honda's in your neighborhood. After my rear spoiler transplant I noticed a SIGNIFICANT improvement in handling at and/or near highway speeds (despite what some people may say you will notice a difference at anything over 53mph.) I no longer had to worry about cross winds. The car stays planted to the road at 100mph+ hands-free. MPG dropped maybe 2 +- 1. It really made the car a LOT more comfortable to drive. Without a front spoiler to even things out there is a tad more understeer but the only times i've noticed this on public roads, has been when i've had an econobox/minivan glued (within 5 feet) to my tail at 90mph+ try to take a highway offramp at the same speed (i didn't lift)(*9 on your cellular phone in massachusetts gets you the state police/ambulance and i only did it once (they slammed the jersey barrier and blew both left tires and then spun (no injuries).) Everyone's tastes differ, I prefer the ricer boy look of the rsr style wing and i LOVE the handling differences I've realized with it compared to what the car originally came with. In the next two weeks I will have a front spoiler painted/installed from MA/SHAW (until first snowfall then for winter I'll go back to the non john deere snowplow look.) but I've been more than ecstatic over the past 40,000 miles i've been driving with just the improved rear spoiler. The other advantage is a stock RSA wing from Porsche weighs a ton more than an aftermarket fiberglass/carbon fiber wing (I had to find two old and used rear decklid shocks to prevent the new wing from smashing through the rear glass when I pulled the release cable.)

While I agree with the suggestion that Jason offered as to the 3.8RSR wing...I think it is a bit too "loud" for the street - althought I like "LOUD"!

I would assume you're looking for a more conservative option? ...just a guess.

Like others on this topic, I have opted for the M.A. Shaw ALL fiberglass one-piece RSA wing for the 964.

It's sweet, they make it so it fits right down in the recessed area where your original "pop-up" spoiler resides and he supplies the factory gasket/welting/bead...whatever you want to call it for a finished look.

If I remember correctly, it's only about $350...or was it $450?? I don't recall exactly. But what you receive is a very high-quality piece. My "body guy" even commented on the quality as he has painted other wings from other manufacturers and had nothing but complaints about how much prep work he had to do before shooting the fiberglass/carbon-fiber piece.

Just relaying what HE said.

Give Michael a call, he's a nice guy, just full of information in regards to what he can do for you.

Okay, so the disclaimer...not affiliated whatsoever - just a VERY satisfied customer.

I'll post a pick of the "Track Rocket" with M.A. Shaw tail and front spoiler once I get home.

Okay, here's a picture of the car shortly after I painted and installed the M.A. Shaw RSA one-piece fiberglass tail and front spoiler:

Looks like what I'm looking for... MA Shaw only has two versions that look like that. The "RS-911" and the "RS-911C2"... I have a C4... Is the deck lid is the same on both?

You want the RS-911C2. The is no difference between the C2 and C4 decklids, since they're both 964's. The "regular" 911 model wing won't fit your car's decklid without modification.

FYI - the MA Shaw wing is good fiberglass, but it will still require a good amount of prep work (filling in pin-holes and sanding the flashing off of the area around the louvres on top). My bodyshop charged me ~$500 to prep, paint and mount the wing. One more point, get some 1/4" foam weatherstripping and apply it to the perimeter of the screen that goes under the louvres on the wing, between the screen and the wing -- otherwise, the screen will rattle.

Good luck!

When I installed the MA Shaw wing on my SC, I put some duck tape on the fiberglass bottom, so the fiberglass wouldn't rest directly on the paint. Perhaps a better solution is to buy the Carrera or Turbo base, that leaves a plastic bead along the edge where the tail joins the lid, and provides plastic between the tail and the lid. Around $15-$25, depending on which one you use, Turbo is less expensive. Will be ordering the Shaw tail for my C2 shortly.
