Default Sway bar- advice please

Hi,

On the meet in wales last month someone metioned(ROBMUG?) that to reduce understeer on a C4 people fit an adjustable sway bar.

I have just done a search and people seem to fit a larger one on the rear on its hardest setting.

some questions that I couldnt see an answer for.

1) can somene in simple terms explain just what is a sway bar
2) is it home fit job or do I have to take it somewhere
3) do I need to get alignment done afterwoods
4) how much will it reduce understeer.
5)where do I get one from in the UK.

sorry thats a lot of questions that I'm sure you are all bored of answering

ok I ve just seen on one website that sway bars dont effect castor etc etc so no set up is required its just a streight swap. looks like a simple enough job ( if anything is simple on a 14 year old car)

C4 people who do not go racing (most) fit 21 or 22mm fixed rear sway bars to their 964s to reduce understeer. An old and proven solution. There is no justification for fitting an adjustable sway bar on a C4 for normal road use.
Another word for a sway bar is a stabiliser bar or anti-roll bar.
Ciao,
Adrian.

I fitted a 21mm bar (amoungst other suspension mods) on my C4 as Adrian suggested and was very happy with the result. It is a simple job that you can do at home and would take about 2 hours. I would find it hard to scale the understeer reduction as I changed to stiffer springs, different camber and wider front tyres at the same time so I covered most mods to reduce understeer. There are a great many articles on this subject and is also covered in great detail in Adrians book (where I referenced most mods). Also look into the the 5mm spacers with 225 tyres on the front as this helps reduce understeer greatly also. Good luck.

doh didnt even think about looking in the book ! I'll fish it out.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get it from?

I have found this but at 300 ish euros its a bit much. FVD list fixed rear only for the C2

The 21mm is fitted to the 1990 Carrera 2 only. The 22mm is fitted to a number of 964 verions. I am pretty sure they are in the book.
One of the UK based parting out places would be a good place to start.
I have a set of RS America sway bars in my basement but the overall cost including shipping would be high.
Ciao,
Adrian.

Adrian
Is the front RS America sway bar adjustable and will it fit on a C4? If yes I am interested!!

Pesty I have a 21 mm also in case the shipping costs from Erick are too high. By the way IMHO this is the first thing you have to change on a C4

Cheers

Why not fit the front RS sway? Why the RSA (just out of interest)?

Problem with the C4 is that you have yhe "extra" drive shafts making life a bit more complicated
