Speedometer problem
My odometer stopped working this past weekend. I reset the trip mileage odometer after getting gas and from then on neither one is working. I took out the speedometer hoping maybe to be able to take this thing apart and check it out but the bezel is pressed on. I don’t see a way to take it apart without destroying it. Who are the best people to send this to for repairs? Is mine the only one to have this happen to or is this common? Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
Never had any problems with my speedo's operation--only the face peeling away. You can remove the bezel, but you have to be very careful not to scratch anything as you pry up the lip. I understand that dedicated shops have special tools for installing/removing the bezel. Personally, having taken the bezels off of my gauges before, I won't do it again. Too difficult/tricky. You can check your Excellence magazine for two advertisers that specialize in speedo repair: Hollywood and Palo Alto Speedometer. You might also want to consider a used speedo. When my face peeled, I purchased a "low mileage" used speedo for $125. (No, I'm not being fraudulent ... my receipts and notes clearly distinguish the car's actual miles ;) ) Hope this helps. |
I just had this happen to an older car, it is evidentally a common problem. The odometer is driven by a small plastic spur gear inside the speedo. The speedo is electronic, thats why it's still working. The gears can get brittle and loose a tooth, or if the trip reset is punched too hard you can bust this gear. My mech recommended pulling it out and sending it to VDO in california. I would think that just about any speedo shop would be fine. I have heard good things about Hollywood Speedometer in CA, they are a VDO service shop.

Saw a whole set of 964 gauges for under 150 on e-bay.
