Question Air Filter element for a drilled air box

High,
Which works better in a drilled air box?,
A factory filter or a K+N? I am using a K+N, but for some reason I'm not sure if its gonna do the job it's supposed to,or am I worrying unnessesarily?

I believe no difference. But factory filter a lot cheaper and included in annual service kit.

Drill it!

George,

How many holes can you put in YOUR airbox ?
John's car is slower because he only has 7 holes. Don't drill it while it's sitting on your fender !

I just got a K&N filter for mine and I have never worried about the filter working. Do what YOU want to do.

I think I have you both beat. I was too lazy to go out and buy a big spade bit, so I ended up with 5/8" bit and drilled out each of the "squares." Since it can be shown that HP is a simple function of cross-sectional airflow (minus any loss to increased skin effect on the edge along circumference of each hole), I would wager that my innovative hole pattern would show signifcant torque and HP gains. I also tuned each hole individually for harmonic response, and the chorused sound is quite dramatic and pleasing to the ear.

Thumbs up

I had gone the same route you have John, i was too lazy to get the 2"hole drill, but i wasnt to lazy to drill out each square and sand them smooth, last time i counted I had 40 holes, lol. I'm gonna try a factory filter and see if there is a difference from the K+N, not expecting much, maybe in sound?,(maybe not)?I'll let ya know.

You all are crazy! Okay, I'll admit it, when I saw the first few threads on this post I lost my freakin' mind...that was funny.

I basically have the same "drill pattern" as John and Tom, didn't count the holes though. I am also using a K&N filter.

Geo, I believe the only difference in using a k&N and factory filter will be the sound. I predict the sound will be louder w/the K&N. Now the K&N boasts more CFM when compared to other filters, HP gains? I dunno.

I figure w/all the upgrades that are in the works, I should use the high-flow K&N.

I loved the sound after drilling my airbox, the added bonus is that I could hear my engine while on the track, as I have factory exhaust at the moment. I usually shift by ear and using my "butt dyno" when I figure there is no more "umph" in the current gear instead of watching the tach. I figure if I get out of line, the rev-limiter will remind me...it is factory set at a very conservative limit of 6,750rpm.

after reading this thread, I'm gonna run downstairs and count the holes. If I don't have at least as many as you guys, I just may cut out the whole end. So there!
