Post 1993 Valve Adjustment Intervals

Have 13,000 miles on the car, bought it 9 months ago with 8,000 miles. Have had an oil change and the mechanic said he thought it needed a valve adjustment(sound?). Being new to the air cooled world(owned 2 944's for 15 years), I don't have alot of experience with 911 sounds. Would appreciate guidance on this issue e.g. frequency of valve adjustments, max. frequency, when to know when to do it or is it just based on miles? Can I go to next oil change(16,000 miles before having it done?) Just don't want to taken advantage of by the mechanic, but want to do the right thing for my car.(er--baby!). Thanks

I believe the manufacturers recommended interval for valve adjustments is every 15,000 miles. Also the same for oil changes (with synthetic) although I do mine at about half that interval or once each year whichever is less.
