Cool Retro-fit air conditioning?

Has anyone had aircon retro-fitted?

After another scorcher (by UK standards) this lunchtime, I concluded that the only thing that would be on my wishlist if I were ever to buy another 964 (that wasn't an RS), is aircon. I wasn't fussed about it when I bought the car because hot days in the UK are a relative rarity, but after another stifling journey, if it's possible to retro-fit without breaking the bank, then I might just consider it.

I had what is basically a 993 system retro-fitted in my 964 by Tech-9 some years ago.

I was lucky to enquire about it when they had just removed a system from a 993 for racing.

In spite of all the horror stories about retro-fitting air-con that you will hear, mine has been a tremendous success!

Also, contrary to what you will hear about air-con and 964s, it WORKS! It may not be as powerful as in some other cars, but I don't think any European summers have yet overwhelmed it. It's great for demisting too.

Cost, if I recall, was about £1000, but note the fortuitous circumstances.

John, thx for the info, pleased to hear that it was a success. I'm thinking of scouring the Husbourne Crawley Autojumble to see if I can get the parts together.

Knowing exactly what I need is the first hurdle, but I figured that if I can at least get a compressor, condensor and CCU, then it will be a start. I've spoken with a local aircon company who are happy to carry out the install for me.

Christer, nope the windows don't open, the car is hermetically sealed, I teleport in and out of it, don't take passengers and have to forsake the enjoyment of drive-thru McDonalds.

I forgot to mention, the only other thing on my wishlist after aircon is a pinstripe interior... ;-)

The one thing I wish my 964 'did'nt' have is air conditioning.

It works well but when it's warm I open the windows/sunroof and take advantage of that all to rare phenomena...the English summers day!

Piers, if ever get to the inconsolable stage about neglecting your aircon, I can foster it to an appreciative home

Be careful about the autojumble, most 964's I know have had their condensers replaced due to leaks. It's probable the condensers you'll find at autojumbles will be the ones that were removed !!!

Thanks for your comments, however it wasn't my intention to sound quite so sarcastic - but hey - you certainly outdid me in that department!

I guess I am with Piers on this one, but maybe the climate is a lot hotter where you are?

Every time I see a post like this I feel like offering my AC system FOC to anyone that wants to come and remove it. My '64 wouldnt miss the weight...

It has never worked; I took it to our only local AC specialist for a leak check which suggested a very VERY slow leak. They refused to charge it because of this and I just can't persuade myself that its worth the trouble and money to trouble shoot the leak. Plus the fact it needs yearly $ervicing..

On the other hand, opening the drivers window at 50+ is like opening an aircraft door in my opinion - the &*$% noise is unreal! So I'll guess I'll sit on the fence a while longer - maybe I can get some outlaw AC guy to charge my system, or maybe if you fancy a trip to Fife with your tools...!?

I can't make my mind up really, I agree that there seems to be rather a lot of unsatisfied airconners out there, and that the probability of attaining a sound condenser 2nd hand is quite limited.

On a grey day like today, it doesn't seem nearly as important, however, I am still of the opinion that the pro's outweigh the con's.

Rob,

If you do go for it, a new condenser is on the cards, they're only like £120 from Cambridge cooling.

Personally, my opinion is that if a car was not born with an accessory as big as a/c, not to bother installing it. Too much expense/hassle for what its worth.
