performance chip--how to access?

I have a c4 with a performance chip and since it came with the car I don't really know if it's a great performance advantage. However cold starting and running is a problem - the car stalls easily and is difficult to drive while cold. I have been given the original chip and wish to re-fit it. Can someone please tell me where and how it goes! ? Many thanks

Hi Trish:

Indeed, a poorly-done performance chip is worse than the stock one and I too, would reinstall the original one.

This is found in the DME box under the driver's seat, at least in LHD cars. You will see a silver metal box under there that says "Bosch Motronic" on it. There will be a silver sticker with all of the numbers, Porsche & Bosch on the cover.

Undo the large multi-pin connector and unbolt the box from the floor. Ther are some bendable tabs that hold the cover down.

The tricky part is separating the 2 circuit boards to get at the chip socket on the lower board. You will unsnap the top board at the rear (furthest away from the connector) from thos 2 little white plastic posts and then using 2 little screwdrivers, release the catches on the opposite end on either side of that multi-pin socket. Thes are black and kinda hard to see. Its tricky.

The EPROM is in a socket. Observe carefully the small notch on the end of the chip and R&R the stock one the same way. Do not touch any of the pins on the chip.

That should do you,........ :)
