964 is too hot
 

As I understand it, one of the nagging problems of the 964 powerplant is not oil temps, even on the track. With no engine-based cooler, and a single external one, the 964 rarely gets hotter than 220 degrees. Is this correct?

On the other hand, guys who swap 964 motors into earlier cars seem to consitently have temperature problems. I know I do, and I currently have two coolers -- one mounted in each of my front fenders (one with a fan and one without). In street driving (even in traffic jams in the summer), everything's fine. But 20 minutes on a hot track and I shoot right up to 250 degrees. I'm currently working to vent more air to both coolers (see this thread on Pelican, and this page on my site. I hope that this will solve the problem, but I'm skeptical.

My question is, what makes the 964 external cooler work so well? Does the 964 front end vent air to the car's cooler at speed, or does that little cooler with its one fan just do a fantastic job?

Any suggestions on how to improve my oil cooling setup would be greatly appreciated.

Tough to say but your first comments are correct. As long as all the fans are working the 964 runs quite cool in regard to oil temp.
Now I have absolutely no idea on your installation but you may wish to consider these items.
The 964 has a Blower Fan which cranks up to high speed dumping hot air from around the around (from the air pipes).
You may also wish to consider the physical sizes of pipes used in the 964 to connect the engine oil system to the oil cooler up front. They are quite large. Obviously lengths of pipes is also going to play a role.
Tough to say anymore excpet maybe you need to check out a full 964 installation and compare to yours. The Porsche Parts Catalogue is very helpful in this area,

The whole key is air flow, my 5 1/2 X 2 1/4 X 20 B&B front mounted cooler has less area than your twin setup, no fans, and has no problem keeping the transplanted 3.6 cool. Normal temp ~80C never above 95C. The only caveat is that on 100F days the car must keep moving, at least slowly.
