Decision help (long)
 

I've got the go for my first Porsche, I have 3 options and can't decide, please help if you can.
1)93 C2, 62000 mi, clean, $27000. Love the car, however, not complete records and it stretches me to max $$$. 15 or 30,000 mile services? Cost of services? What's the liklyhood that the orig clutch & distributor belt have lasted this long? Is this price fair?
2)88 911, 90000mi, clean, some records $20000. Cost fits better. However, not as smooth/powerful as C2 (I really like the C2), cheaper to maintain than C2?? How is the reliablity between these two given they are in similar condition?
3)93 968, 67000 miles $17000, all records, clean, new trans, nice car, however not a 911. I know nothing about the cost of keeping these models happy. It would appear that the prior owner spent plenty, but I suspect she recieved some dealer gouging. Can a guy who's always wanted a 911 be happy in a 968? Have any of you tried? Is there any cost benefit to trying?

C2 prob had new clutch and flywheel by now. Poss Dist belt. Has it got the dist vent kit fitted?

After owning several different Porsches, I would have to say take the C2. I have had mine for a month now and am thrilled w/the performance and drivability of the car.

You wouldn't believe the difference in reaction you get driving down the street, getting gas, etc. People actually think the 964 is a very new car, having had a nice 924, a 944 and an SC...then moving onto my latest "toy", there is definitely a difference...these cars are smoooooooth!

But then, it's all about your budget and what you're willing to put out. Like John says, I doubt the '93 C2 has the original clutch, I bought mine and two days later the original clutch fragmented, that was at 51k mi.

As far as the distributor belt issue, the car is a '93, I believe they were born w/the distributor belt vent setup?? If not, you may want to get it replaced regardless...cheap insurance.

Sounds like you really like the C2. Buy what you like and you will be happy, even if you have to wait while you save up.

The post about people thinking a 964 is almost new has been my experience too, except for the porchefiles.

I love my 92 C2 cab.

if you go for the 968 I'm sure you will have fun in the car, but you will always want a 911.

the 964 seems like a great deal, go for it.

I've had several 911's, currently a 84 carrera and recently aquired a 93 RSA. There is no comparison to the 968, if you like the 911 feel, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT THE 968, you will hate yourself everytime you see a 911.

I love my 84, it has been as cheap to own as my 4runner (including insurance, dosn't leak, and is very reliable.) My only complaint is the AC in the desert not always adequte. An 88 should have slightly better AC. However the 964 will have real AC (it may be enough to keep up in MN). The 964 has much broader powerband and has a much more sophisticated suspension. I prefer the unassisted steering of the early cars, (hence the RS) but I think it is a matter of taste. With the 88 you get a tried and true engine/trans setup, but I think the "problems" with the 964's are overstated. If the 88 won't break the bank, get it and move up later. I started with a 67S, then 74 3.0, 84 and now the RS, they are all great cars....just my .02 :D

jfkaminsky, your dad's right on there. I've always found that to be true. You get a 5 star rating for that one.
