O2 sensor

In a column on technical tips in my local chapter PCA magazine, it was suggested that an O2 sensor that is more than 50,000 miles old is virtually worthless. He goes on to say that a properly functioning O2 sensor will make a world of difference in performance. I bought my '93 with 76,000 miles. It now has 86,000. The car runs great and I have no evidence that the O2 sensor was ever replaced. Is there a way to test the sensor? If not, should I replace it?

TIA

In my opinion do not change it unless you are failing emission tests.

However, these can be tested with the aid of a voltmeter and blow torch (propane type). It involves heating the sensor and checking for a voltage.

check out www.fuel-parts.co.uk under the technical section. They explain the various types of sensor and how to test them
