mystery oil leak
LAST FALL, IF THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED A COUPLE OF DAYS, A SPOT OF MOTOR OIL, AND A SPOT OF SWEPCO (EACH THE SIZE OF A DIME) WERE ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. THIS WENT ON FOR MONTHS. i HAD TO TAKE A 500 MILE RUN, FAST, AND IN HOT WEATHER END OF APRIL. cHANGED THE OIL BEFORE THE TRIP. aT THE END OF THE TRIP, CAR WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT A WEEK, AND SURPRISE, *NO* OIL DRIPS! sINCE THEN, HAVE CHANGED THE TRANNY OIL TO MOBIL 1, AND STILL NO DRIPS. i WONDER IF HAVING THE CAR SIT IDLE FOR PERIODS OF TIME CAN ACTUALLY CAUSE THIS? i'M NOT COMPLAINING!

I just did an oil change a couple weekends ago... backtracking... after my previous oil change, when dumping out the oil catch pan, found one of the oil plug washers. Figured it wasn't extremely critical and wasn't about to lose around 6 quarts of Mobil 1 to put it on, so I left it be and saved it for next time. Anyway, was getting nice little oil spots about the size of a silver dollar on my BRAND NEW DRIVEWAY every night. Anyway, last oil change, replaced the washer and that little annoyance is gone.
Nice to have those little problems solve themselves without requiring more money.

I don't know the answer to Horst's specific question, but I wanted to congratulate him and Brian on their "cheap" fixes.
I had a few oil leaks in my car -- let's see if I can remember -- one in one of the cam seals, and I forget where else. When I had my 60k service done, I told my mechanic to leave the engine undertray off. Well, the engine underpan might be good at keeping the heat in, but it's also good at keeping the oil off the garage floor.
So...I ended up having my mechanic fix all those oil leaks. Not cheap, but now my car doesn't leak a drop, even without the undertray.
I'm not sure why I felt the need to share this....but since I typed it all in, I might as well post it.
Have a great weekend everyone! I'm driving out to Sacramento tonight so I can be in the PCA Zone 7 autocross tomorrow!!
