Angry Turbo 3.6 for sale - UK

I've decided to sell my speed yellow Turbo 3.6 for various reasons...

Anyone in the UK interested in buying it? I'll be advertising it for £37.5K or maybe £38K since it is now completely sorted, aligned etc etc.

The car itself is in stunning condition and goes like a rocket. Bodywork and interior are *almost* perfect. It's done 49,500 miles and has a sports exhaust.

I'd love to keep it but the amount of enjoyment I get from it is not sufficient to compensate for (a) the tying up of capital - I do after all have a dependent wife and kid and variable income at the mo and (b) the stress and worry of owning such a nice example of a rare car. Every journey is a risk, every car park a minefield...

Plus I don't physically fit in it perfectly, etc etc.

Anyway it's a stunning car. Someone's got to want it..

At the moment I have only two low-quality pictures, taken in cold weather:

Hi all,

Greg, I am sorry that you have to sell your wonderful car. Good luck on getting another car.

I always wanted to ask this question regarding selling a car after a very short time of ownership.

Are you willing to lose all that money on taxes and expenses when you buy car and then sell it right away?

I guess I am on the poor side of things. It takes me my whole life to save for my car. Just to think of the amount of money being lost (taxes) from selling the car at purchased price or a little better. It hurts so much...

I'm not sure what you mean by taxes - we don't have the same arrangement here.

But you're right, you can lose a lot, especially when you buy from a dealer and then sell privately. I've done this so often in my life already it makes me shudder. At least in this case I didn't put much money into the car after buying it, so I shouldn't lose much, even though it's better than it was when I bought it (it's had an alignment, a service, new front wishbone and new clutch slave cylinder).

But hey, the only justification for owning a car like that is if you love it, right? It's hard to judge how much you should sink into a car when it *does* make you feel special every time you see it and drive it. But if you don't feel blown away by it, then it's definitely not worth it - IMHO.

If I had unlimited money and unlimited space I would definitely keep it. But I don't have either, so...

Greg,

Wow, I first met you only 2 days after you had got your Turbo, at a Rennlist UK meet. We are now about to have the next Rennlist meet and you're selling the car already! Its amazing how things change.

I do think it must be hard to have a bright yellow Turbo in our part of the country. All the negative attention it takes unfortunately do spoil your drive. I am often worried about leaving my 'urban mimetic black' car on the street, never mind if it was beacon yellow! It would probably be a different story if you lived in Germany and had an underground car park and another secure car park at work. Alas, the UK is not very designed for cars, especially around London.

Sorry to see it go, but I understand your reasons. I guess it was a bit of an impulse buy?

Hi Greg,

While I'm sorry to see an Internet savvy Turbo 3.6 owner disappear from the board [eventually], I can understand your reasoning.

At the price these cars command they have to really float your boat to justify holding on to them [at least for we working types they do!], and yours had a hard battle as it seemed to start from a figurative "half-sinking position", albeit only due to problems which were ultimately minor to fix.

Anyway, good luck with the sale process.

My car now has 3 minor dimple dents on the front wing (same wing - weird huh?). As a result I don't feel nervous leaving my car anywhere - who wants a perfect example anyway? These are usually overpriced and you turn into a nervous wreck as an owner. Greg, not saying your particular car is overpriced, my comment is aimed at the people that own a 1990 C2 with perfect bodywork, average mechanics and are asking £23-24k for the 'pleasure' of owning it....crazy!

Best of luck Greg. I can't help thinking that you need to get back into work ASAP. You will feel a lot better when you have money coming in. I would delay the sale until that point. You might be experiencing the 'dole queue jitters' - I would wait.

Greg

As I am currently also selling I really can sympathise.

Your heart says keep it, but your head and common sense says sell.

However I will definately return to 911 ownership, after 6 years of looking down at that fantastic front view with those two stovepipe wings and that glorious soundtrack at 6,000 rpm it won't be long before I cave in to temptation again.

Hey, I'm touched by everyone's comments... Makes me even sadder to be getting rid of the car.

Maybe I'll still be allowed to lurk on the board though.... as an honorary Rennlist member..?

Christer - I think you have a good point. I am now earning again, and in a way it's that return to reality that's made me reconsider my finances. I really ought to clear the mortgage and get some sort of long-term security sorted before I indulge in toys...

George - yep, you know what it's like..! Part of you wants to be responsible financially (especially where a family is concerned) but part of you says life isn't worth living without indulgences.. I'm sure I'll be back too - after all I've already gone through a 928S4, 928GTS, 993C2 and now the Turbo so I'm gradually making my way through the entire range..

In order to minimise possible withdrawal symptoms I've decided to swap the Turbo for another bike. I won't feel so bad about having £6K tied up in a toy. Just think - £6K wouldn't even pay for a new set of wheels for the T3.6...!!

Greg,
If you really mean "swap" then I've got a 6K bike I'll happily swap for your turbo! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

So what bike are you going to get? I'm a bit biased - but I'd say go for an R1....

Greg,
Hmm, now I've come back to this page, I've realised that if I'd just read your signature properly......

Ah well, VFR800s do have good reputations. Not sure it's the 2 wheel equivalent of a 911 turbo though.

Hi Dave.

No, you're right, but I'm too big for things like the R1 and they're just a bit too full-on for me. I also love the look of the VFR (not the VTEC model though) and I like the noise they make. I also want Honda reliability etc etc. It's also quick enough for me.

Meanwhile I was looking at some photos of the 911 Turbo that I took for car adverts, and - Damn - it really is a fine looking car. Shame I'm not extremely wealthy, because then it would definitely have a place in The Collection...

Greg,

I've just thought of a great solution for you!

Just sell that C200K you've got, I'm sure that it won't be missed nearly as much. Plus, you can then use the Turbo on a day to day basis and maintain it with the money from the Merc. Simple no?

Hi Riccardo.

Believe me, I've tried that one... No joy, I'm afraid. SWMBO was over the moon to have one of her dreams fulfilled - ie to own a new Mercedes - and now she has one she's not letting it go!!

(I even tried mentioning that the Merc will cost more in depreciation than the 911 - probably 3 times as much - but it didn't work)

Actually the obvious candidate for replacement is the Alpina, since I don't need a big saloon for 99% of my travel.. but as I keep saying it's such a great car, and fits me so well, I would be crazy to let it go...
