In June 2001 bought my 1990 C4 Cab for $21,800. Original non-up-dated gasketless engine. The owner said it leaked oil, driver electric window sometimes sticks, cab top cable broke, and no A/C or heat. He was fed up paying his mech to fix it and sold it to me as the BMW dealer offered him less when he bought his new BMW SUV.

The oil leaks turned out to be both chain bracket cam gear "O" rings and the lower rocker arm cover gaskets. I fixed the latter and did the valve lash setting. Left the oil leaking cam "0" rings to the mech who charged $1,007 and that included timing the cam at required 1.26mm, now no more oil leaks. Have since found the twin dist drive belt to be worn and have ordered a Porcshe rebuilt dist. The lack of heat was simply the rear blower motor ballast resistor. Still no A/C though and the top I put down manually. The driver window now no longer sticks for some reason. Fixed the water leaks as the lower areas of the door seal leak and required further weather strip to help the stock striping keep the water out. Rides rougher than my 993 but C4 handles on off roads much better.

Thanks,

Patrck

Thanx for the many replies. I bought my 90 c2 targa from the original owner , a florida md, in 1998 for $24k. It was absolutely mint, perfect records and all upgrades. I sold my 85 911 targa that I bought for $20k in 95 and sold for $20k to buy the 90. I spent 6 months looking for the right car at the right price. I have had several 911s and I try to "trade up" every 3-4 years. I feel if you buy right and maintain the car that for the most part older 911s have stopped depreciating. Certainly this is true for early 911s and even 82-89 cars.I am of the opinion that early 964s will hold there value in the mid $20s but it is certainly a buyers market. I would like to trade up to a 97-98 993 cab but we have a firm one car in one car out rule at our house so that is why I was testing the waters selling my car.As it just started snowing in Buffalo my primary thoughts are not of top down driving but of 4 wheel drive for the next few months with the 911 happily stored away. If prices perk up in the spring so be it, otherwise I'll just have to "suffer' and keep driving my present 911.Things could be much worse.

'91 C4 Coupe, 47k miles, updated wheels and mirrors, LUK flywheel & new clutch, a very minor oil weep on the topside of the engine (no drips). Needed a distributor belt ($150). Paid $29,500 for the car in late August, she just turned 52,000. No problems so far.

I'm very pleased to report that I just took the plunge 3 weeks ago on my very first Porsche, a '91 C2 Coupe.

All mechanicals in good shape, clutch and flywheel done, 38,000 miles. I paid approx $26,000 (depending on current US/CDN exchange rate) for a nice one-owner car that I found in Vancouver. Took me a bit of looking, plus a weekend jaunt across the continent to look at 2 cars, but I'm very happy with my decision.

By the way, can anyone tell me why my battery won't hold a charge for longer than 6 days? Is it time for a new one, or does the factory alarm really draw that much current? In any case, I reluctantly put the baby to bed yesterday for the next 5 months. Winters in Montreal are brutal...so I use the Audi.

Nice to be here.

Marc

Marc, I had problems with my battery also after times of non use. Make sure your doors are closed and you dont leave a key ifn the ignition. That drained my battery. Otherwise spend the $60 on a new one if you dont know the age of yours. I just put my 911 away and I would like to drive an Audi in our Buffalo winters, but my wife hogs it! Congrats , You will be a happy man in the spring.

Hi Bob,
I bought a 91 C2 Targa 2 with 50,000 miles years ago. I paid $25,500.00 from a md in PA. At that time there was a black 90 cab at landrover amherst for $34K.
Lately there have been some 964's in the paper locally for between $26K and $31K. I think I saw your add in the Buffalo News asking $23 (if your name is crabtree) That is one of the lowest prices I have seen, your mileage may be high?

Well it's nice to see somone else from this area on rennlist, there aren't too many porsches in this area. See you on the roads.

Here is a pic of my car at the niagara pca concours this last summer. http://www.niagarapca.com/photos/pic8.jpg

Planter, Ilive a couple miles from you and I'm in niagara pca.I missed the concours in august but took 2nd in 2000. My car is very clean, all upgrades and 80k miles. I priced it realistically given our climate and economy. Buffalo motors has the same model/year as mine for $30k.I am trying to trade up to a 993 cab but my car is now in storage so I'll deal with it next year. I'll see you at the pca events/meetings.
