Another 'potential' newbie: '91 C4 > how's this sound?
Hello all-
Been posting a bit on the "Pelican" forum, I like this one too!
Looking at a '91 C4 38k, 17" RUF Speedline wheels with brand new RE71's, Aero mirrors, "big tube" exhuaust (sorry, don't know name), new pads / rotors, shocks lowered to lowest setting. 2nd owner buying new ///M3.
Here's the thing. He 1st spun it lightly driver side into guard rail due to flat rear tire. Months later, he was rear ended LR @ ~ 40 mph. Entire car was stripped bare, and painted very nicely, looks spectacular. Damage caused cat to separate at flange, and has slight leak. Car drives COMPLETELY solid, zero rattles, creaks, and tracks dead straight.
Orig. clutch slips high RPM, no dist. vent, PPI revealed dryest part of motor was HEAD gaskets, but this car was produced 7/90, registered 1/92, so I'd doubt the heads were updated, and I'd expect to have to do the LUK with the clutch. A/C doesnt' blow cold, I'm told needs 'recharge'.
I'm told the COMPLETE clutch job, valve adjust, new plugs / check wires, and new dist. belt w/ vent will cost me about $4,000-$4,500, confirmed from 4 local non-dealers.
Here's the thing: I'd be paying $22-$22.5k for the car, putting me at a $26k total car.
How is that price for a '91 C4 38k miles with new clutch, etc. and gorgeous mods, but that's been hit? Curious. Thanks to all.

Considering the economy and the used sports car market right now, I bet you could find an early 964 with similar miles and in very nice shape WITHOUT the stories or accident history for the same money or less.
There seems to be some nice bargins out there right now if you take your time.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Paul,
I've been trying to put myself into your shoes, and I keep coming back to a couple of questions:
1. How are the prices for '91 C4's in your area? Or....what kind of 964 will $26000 buy you?
2. Do you plan to keep the car for a while? Because the known accident will probably always come into play at resale time. I've heard people say that you should discount a car 10% if it's had an accident. If you plan to keep the car, that shouldn't matter, as long as the damage was repaired properly.
However, if you plan to resell it quickly (which as we all know is not a very good idea in this market), I'd hold off on this car.
3. Another thing that has piqued my curiosity is that you said the gaskets around the cylinder head were dry? Has the car been updated, or is it one of the '91's that had the gasket at build time? (There's another thread where the engine serial numbers are given for the update.)
Just some food for thought....

Wow, $26,000 seems like a really good price considering I saw a 964 with 60,000 going for $40,000 at Parcars (a local Porsche dealership).. What are the typical prices seen for a 964 with low miles?? Thanks

John:
I bought my 964 about a year ago (towards the end of the 'seller's market'). I paid $28,000 for a '90 C2 with 27,000 miles. I spent about $1500 on a $30k service and a few other small issues it needed (dist vent kit, etc). So, for under $30k I have a relatively nice car. The original asking price by the dealer I bought it from was $36,900.
Most of the early 964's in my area (Midwest) seem to have asking prices in the high 20's and very low 30's. Examples that are for sale at dealers near me:
'93 Cab, Tip, 42,000 miles - $33,500
'91 Cab, 41,000 miles - $31,000
'90 Cab, 26,000 miles - $33,000
'89 C4 59,000 miles - $29,000
Winter is here, so I bet these cars would all sell in the mid - high $20's.
Hope this helps,
Jay

Take a pass... you can find a bunch of cars for that kinda cash... the 964 as a whole has too many woes going for it and to throw in body damage doesn't help. Take your time as there are tons of cars that will do you good.
