993 C2 Coupe vs. 964 Speedster?
 

Currently I have a white '94 Speedster with 37k miles, tiptronic, comfort seats. It is a very nice, no problem car. I have the option of trading for a '95 C2 coupe with 13k miles, 6 speed, Speed Yellow/Black, loaded & mint, for even money.

I love the uniqueness of my Speedster, but also love the updated look of the 993. What would you do?

I would see which of both will stay high in the Dollars in a few years.

The speedster would be a collectors item I think.

I'd keep the speedster...they're pretty rare, and I think you'll be sorry later on if you trade.

You've got the last year of the 964 and you're considering the first year of the 993. GENERALLY speaking, the first-year cars have a few bugs that need to be addressed and the last-year examples are the best of the bunch. The risk alone makes the move seem somewhat imprudent. Now, if you were considering a mint 96-98, then your chances for hassle-free (read inexpensive) motoring might be greater.

a white speedster sounds really cool, a 993 has nothin' on ur ride.

I'd hang on to that Speedster. A white, '94, Tip Speedster is relatively rare. There are plenty of 993 C2 coupes to choose from. A 1994 964 is probably one of the most solid and reliable 911's to own. ALL of the bugs were worked out by that model year. The Tiptronic is one of Porsche's best transmissions as well (as stated by Porsche themselves).

I agree with Joey above, there can be some issues with the early 993's (wiring harness, etc).

Not much looks better (in my eyes) than a mint white 964 Speedster. It's a much more unique looking 911 than a standard, narrow body 993.

I would only consider it if the 993 was a 96 or later model as the 95 cars are known to have a few problems. Just look on the 993 board and you'll see most of the niggling problems occur on this vintage.

The 993 will be more practical and I like its looks. Having said that, the Speedster is a very special car and extremely rare (I've never seen one live) thus probably holding its value better than a standard C2. Just look at the 3.2 Speedster prices vs standard Carreras.

I think that the so-called problems on the early 993's are pretty much along the same lines as the so-called problems on the early 964's....most cars are fine and the ones that have had some problems have been fixed.

I would lean towards keeping the Speedster for the rarity and hence the value it retains.

Of course, if the Speedster just doesn't satisfy you as an owner then that is whole different matter. I would still be careful about an outright swap though. Have you considered selling it separately and seeing what kind of money it will command? It may be that a straight swap is not beneficial financially for you...

If people read the 964 board without much other knowledge, they'd conclude that 964s are very troublesome cars, and that the problems are major rather than minor. I think this is not really the case. Similarly, one could get the feeling that '95 993s are problematic -- again, not true. The very early cars apparently had some teething problems, but to suggest that most '95s should be avoided is simply unfounded. Remember, also, that the '95 model year lasted 19 months for the US market, and there were '94 993s in the RoW. There was a lot of time before and during the '95 model year to fix the early problems. Only a small percentage of '95s give trouble. From personal experience, my '95 coupe has cost me a total of $26 in unscheduled repairs in the more than 2.5 years and 15,000 miles (now 48K) I've had it.

That said, the 964 Speedster is a sweet car and a very different experience from a 993 Coupe -- which one makes you want it more?

I have both a 94 Speedster 5 spd and a 96 993TT. I have recently purchased 2 other cars and I need 1 of them to be sold to make room. I am having a tough time deciding but I am really leaning towards selling the 993TT over the 94 Speedster. My thoughts are, both cars currently have similar sale prices given similar mileage and condition. In an given day I open up autotraders, cars.com, ebay or any online sale site and search for both cars, I see over 10-15 993Tt on ebay and maybe one single 94 speedster and sometimes not even one. I know 993TT is a superior car and by far much faster however it would be easier to find another if I needed to get back into 1. I for 1 love the classic 911 lines and the chopped windshield is just plain beautiful to look at. I will most likely keep the Speedster.

+1 though keep the Speedster. There are many 993s to choose from if the itch is that bad.

Keep the Speedster but buy a higher mileage normally priced 993. Its ok to have more than one car, right ?
I love my 35K mile 1995 993. I don't plan on selling it ever even though its not as exclusive as a Speedster - its a keeper.
