Interesting. A couple years ago, the "ugly duckling", "red-headed stepchild", etc. monikers were a common discussion topic. But I believe as more people become aware of the amazing performance and value offered by the 964 and that the reliability issues were greatly overblown, the snide comments have all but disappeared.

I think it's been at least a couple years since I've heard of any bashing. We also used to have cheerleading threads where we would all go on and on about how great these cars were in spite of all the criticism. My, how things have changed. ;)

Have you read the latest issue of 911/PW?

They seem to take great relish in 964 bashing. :grr:

Sorry, you should read GT Purely Porsche to fulfill 964 masochistic tendencies. Bought that magazine once and never again..

That's because nobody likes a 3.6 ltr, or the G50 transmission, or the coilover suspension, or bigger and better brakes, or airconditioning that works, or the old school style, or....wait a minute....I believe most p-car owners like these things???? Oh, forget it. ;)

I think you really have to take these Magazines with a pinch of salt, I think there is considerable editorial bias, especially in 911/pw, I've kinda stopped buying it now anyway. It will be interesting to see what messrs Raby and Mugglestone come up with in their "Total 911" magazine, I think you'll find a more enlightened opinion there.
I had a 90 964 and it wasn't a great experience for me, it culminated in a spun big end bearing and a £5.5k engine rebuild , but to be honest it had been abused in the past, It was also a Targa, which just didn't work here in the UK, it constantly leaked.
Had I bought a well maintained 964 coupe I think my first venture into Porsche ownership would have been a much more pleasant experience.
I now have a late 993 car

I totally agree. A 964 offers excellent value for money, compared to other 911 models. Running costs arn't that much higher, and you get all the modern gizmo's as mentioned by scooter92. Personally I dont think I'd turn more heads in a newer model either. So why bash??? I dont know. Can't find any rational reasons for it. I know buying my 964 made alot of sense to me. Old school styling rocks!! :)

Hey all that bashing helped me get a nice 91 C2 for about the same as a comparable 87-88 Carrera a few years back. No regrets.

I did a lot of research before I purchased mine. Yes I heard they had problems but I also heard of the rewards of ownership. I thought about a 993 but they started to lose their styling starting with that model. I still toy with the idea of swapping mine for a 993... But not for too long. Part of the fun is the tinkering... a sprtscar isn't a true sportscar (IMHO) if you can't/don't tinker with it every now and then.

Everything (Other than the GTs) from 1999 forward looks like a Ford product with a ground effects kit! We won't talk about the water cooled engines!

Oh, and as I understand it, the 964 sold at the dealership for more than the 993 due to the 964 being the last Porsche built by hand. True or not?

I previously owned a 1971 911 and though it got me hooked and is worth 5x what I sold it for the 964 is so much superior in handling and power ts not even close(964 still looks as cool though)
PS: The 71 leaked oil. :)
