On my stock 1990 964 Targa, I have removed my airbox cover completely (I am holding the filter in place with duct tape until I find a used airbox cover to saw off, because I'd prefer keeping my cover stock for resale time).

The sound? Amazing. On light loads, it sounds 100% stock. But on full loads it makes a gorgeous brassy bellowing which I find subtle and cultured. Gets notably louder past 4000rpm and then strikes in some more past 6000rpm. It's an amazing change, that retains an "original" Porsche sound, but more so (no resonance, no excessive bass, no ricer noises or V8 noises). I find myself changing gears all the time to play my 964 like a muscial instrument.

Now, I love the induction sound so much I'd like even more of it.

Do you think replacing the stock paper air filter with a high-flow K&N type filter would increase the sound level (dB)?

I have the reply to my own question because I have now tested the car with no air filter: same sound as with the stock paper air filter (and no filter cover). So a K&N would not sound louder than a stock air filter ; it's all in the drilled (or removed) cover.

Strange! I bought an extra cover for my 964 rs and cut it like a frame, like the american cup cars. With my stock paper filter the difference was almost not noticeable but when I put in the k&n filter there is a amazing groal from 5000rpm
