Maybe the best way is to go for the 993 engine so whenever (if ever...) sell your 964 for a 993 you already have a 993 racing engine <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

I like your thinking!! It will be a LONG term project (I don't have loads of free time away from the office), so I may need to start with a 993 engine to slot into my 993 if I get one.

No disrespect but I don't like that thinking. In fact it sucks. I can see you 5 years down the road trying to fit the 993 engine into Jaguar X-Type or something similarly absurd. I think this is a really bad idea, unless of course you just sell the 993 engine when you can't use it yourself. Hmm, wonder how much someone would pay for a DIY built engine?

I don't see the upside in this project other than having something to do in your spare time. I'd spend that time driving your 964 amongst other things.

All IMHO.

Hi John,

Firstly, I do like your idea and enthusiasm - it would be great to build up an engine in your own garage, doing all the work yourself and learning all about the internals of the engine etc. I'd love to do that as well.

But...and I don't want to put a damper on your idea...how much engine rebuilding experience have you got? and what engineering gear have you got available to you?

I only say this because I really don't think the 964/993 engines are an economical first DIY home build, simply because of the expense when you get something wrong.

I've been involved with several race engine rebuilds (for lotus 7's) mainly on Japanese engines and you would be surprised how little you can do without big workshop machinery (lathes/presses/drill machines) and precision tools (Camwheels/Dial guages/Micrometers etc), but the biggest thing is the builders experience with a particular engine.

It's so easy to get something really wrong. For example simply getting a bearing around the wrong way or incorrectly torquing a cam and bending it. With a 964 engine the cost would be very high.

Anyway if you decide to do it - please keep us all informed - its an interesting topic.

There will be NO Jags in my garage!!

No dampening taken - I have a mechanical engineering degree & I've done a bit of tinkering & I have a friend whoi is a Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo engine builder in York if I get stuck.

Its not high on my list of things to do - wife was a bit 'no way, where are you going to put it', but I think it will be a great stress reliever over the next couple of years.
