1994 Speedster Widebody?

I am about to purchase a 94 Speedster wide body. My question to you is how do I find out its a factory wide body? I was told that I could look under the engine deck lid and look for the "M code". If so does anyone know the "M code" for a factory wide body speedster? If not, what’s the "M code" for a 94 non-wide body speedster. Thank you for all the help you can give!

There is no such thing as a 1994 Speedster Widebody. Some people (well one person) is claiming that Porsche produced 20 at the Spezial Werks department. Well I have found zero evidence to confirm such things. The option number would be M491 and this would be on the label under the trunk lid and a copy of this label is found in the original service record book.
The actual speedster option code (yes there is one) will not show up on the paperwork. This is only used internally at the factory. What is on the label (again, not under the engine lid unless this has an engine up front) is the type number. The Speedster type number is 964320. This number can be found near the top of the label. The widebody would have a diferent number. What it is nobody can tell you because as I said there is no such animal known to man. We do know that some Speedsters were professionally converted in the USA. Maybe some in Europe as well. The widebody would also have other changes as well.
You should be able to determine that this is not a factory built widebody fairly quickly.

Thank for the info. I have also asked my local Porsche Dealer. One sales person that have been there for 15 years swears that two were sold by his dealership. He is the one that told me about the M code. He did not know the actual code. He is only person that saids they exist, so you might be right. Thank you!

Is there any chance you can check this Speedster out and post your findings. Maybe a few digital photos of all the labels and the VIN etc. The label under the trunk lid is going to be really helpful if we can see it. I woul dlike to get more info on this Speedster because if it is genuine it is an untold story. We just need some evidence which will be found on the Speedster,

I Have to agree with Adrian. Being the owner of a RHD 94 Speedster (which I am selling by the way), the only wide-bodies produced were for the original 911 Speedster. The 964 version were consistent in body style but had varying options regarding a/c, computer, seats, etc. Out of interest, what color is the on you're looking at?

Porsche did produce a few wide body Type 964 Speedsters in the Special Works Department (Werk I). I saw a few.

Dear Robert,
Now I am convinced I am going to go out and find one.

PS: Guys these will not be found on ebay. These will be auctioned at Christies or similar if they ever come on the market.

You know, I wouldn't have believed that factory wide body Speedsters exist either.

However, from "Porsche Speedster - The Evolution of Porsche's Light-Weight Sports Car" by Dr. Michel Thiriar. In this book, the author states "The Speedster Carrera 2 was not officially manufactured in a Turbo-Look version. Approximately twenty Carrera 2 Turbo-Look Speedsters were nevertheless constructed at the specific request of some customers. These cars had the characteristics of Carrera 2 Turbo-Look Cabriolets...."

Adrian, I assume this is the "one person" you were talking about in your first thread? I, like you, will not fully beleive it until seen with my own eyes. But once seen.... <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

Dear Brad,
No it wasn´t actually. I have had a number of what I call "creditable eye witnesses" tell me about these Speedsters. I will now try and seek them out. Well one. There is supposed to be a couple which were sold to German customers. I assume most went to the Arab states seeing as they have not popped up anywhere else. There is some mean special machinery down in North Africa from many manufacturers not just Porsche. The Audi Allroad is not new. The first ones were actually Audi 80 sedans but that is another story,

That is correct - They were build up on narrow bodied Speedsters ( Speedster VIN ) i have found 4 ROW till now ( two black, one red and one blue ) some "Experts" talk of 8 existing peaces?

NO M491 even in the Porsche internal Paperwork !

Best from Germany

Just out of curiosity, what do 964 speedsters usually go for these days? I drive an RS America and they are obviously worth a little more than a C2.

How many Speedsters were originally made?

There were a lot made 1506 in total 925 for US market and 581 for ROW. market varies depending on condition and color. Some bring big bucks others not much but probably around the same as an RSA.

I don't want to open this argument again and i discussed many "rare" cars with Adrian back in the day. What i don't understand is how come there are all these strange T/L models that supposedly exist yet there is no supporting documentation on build sheets or factory paperwork?

Even the most rare one off America GS came with a complete list of options codes and pages upon pages of documentation. If they can offer that info for a custom made one off car why when they make 4 of these and 8 of those is there nothing that can support it and honestly if you were buying such a rare beast why as an owner didn't you request or maintain such records. I know I would have. All I hear is a friend of him or a cousin of that saw one once.

The second to last 928 GTS was so heavily optioned it was amazing what was spent. It even came with all the documentation. Including the balance of the seat belt roll that had to be purchased since they had to dye an entire roll to get purple seat belts. Why does that car have documentation that can be reviewed but these cars can't?

Unless I see factory documentation and not a scan of a strange document that looks nothing like any of the standard Porsche documentation I have to argue that they never initially left the factory that way. It is possible they were converted by the factory later but that IMO doesn't make them authentic or rare just another modified car...

In any case we know there were n/b and W/b 911 speedsters made as far as 964's the verdict is still out I guess.
